Shh! (Oxley College #1) by Stacey Nash
Release Date: 02/23/15

Summary from Goodreads:

Nineteen-year-old Olivia Dean has the perfect reputation, the perfect boyfriend, and an increasingly perfect CV. She has it all, until Christian breaks up with her in public, calling her out as a self-gratifying sexoholic: the kind that plays solo. But Olivia doesn’t masturbate all night — the only thing she does is sleep … right?

Now all the boys on campus seem to want her attention for the absolutely wrong reason — including resident hottie, Logan Hays. He's pulling out his best moves to gain her attention, so resisting his sexy charm is hard work. With rapidly slipping grades, a disturbingly lurid reputation and demanding parents, Olivia must discover the truth behind her rumoured sleeping problem. If she doesn't, the perfect life she's worked so hard for may slip away, including the one person who has Olivia breaking all her rules — Logan.

What do you do when you’re asleep?

Playlist:

Music and writing seem to go hand in hand for many authors, as they make wonderful stories whilst listening to their favourite tunes. Genres of music also happen to go hand in hand with styles of music. Romance authors generally have playlists filled with love songs, sci-fi authors fill their playlists with fast beat songs that set the tone for war and destruction, and fantasy is whimsical.

There’s always a lot of talk around playlists for authors; what songs they write to and what songs inspire their writing. I guess I’m the odd one out; as I work best to the tone of silence. Maybe I’m too easily distracted, for I find myself bopping along to the music instead of writing new words. But I do still use it in my creative process. When I’m not writing, I constantly listen to the playlist for the manuscript I’m working on. In the car, while I’m cleaning the house, while I’m soaking in the tub.

So today I’d like to share the playlist for Shh! It’s a bit eclectic as I tend to gather songs that hold meaning for different characters rather than an overall story feel.

Catch my Breath by Kelly Clarkson: This is song that really sums up Olivia’s life. Coming from a family where social graces are just as important as keeping up appearances, Olivia was brought up to care more about what other peoplethink than what makes her happy. But then she realizes that she hasn’t been living at all, that no one can hold me back, I ‘aint got time for that. You’ve helped me see, the beauty in everything. I won’t be told what’s supposed
to be right.Catch my Breath really captures Olivia’s journey from a young socialite striving for perfection, to a young woman who realizes to truly be happy, you need to do what makes you happy.

Complicated by Avril Lavinge: Is picking a song sung by a woman for a male character weird? Maybe a little, but I feel complicated is a song the speaks of the way Logan helps about Olivia. He teaches her to chill out, lay back, it’s been done before. Just be you, don’t
make it complicated.

Count on Me by Bruno Mars: Logan. Just Logan … Count on Me is everything about him. Logan’s dependable, caring, you can count on me like 1,2,3. He’s one of those people that would do anything for those he cares about.

Human by Christina Perri: Poor Olivia … Human is a song that speaks of what Olivia feels and keeps to herself. It’s the fake exterior she puts on for the life she’s been groomed for. The
young socialite who’s loved by all, but then her human side starts to show and Olivia is after all just a hurt, scared girl.  I can fake a smile, I can force a laugh. I can dance and play if that’s what you ask. I can do it. I can do it, but I’m only human … I crash and I break down.

Everybody's Fool by Evanescence: Like Human, this song speaks of what happens to Olivia when her sleeping disorder rears its head and rumours begin to spread. It really makes me feel for her as she falls from being one of the most popular girls to the college laughing stock.

And that’s it. Thanks for joining me to talk about music. You can see / listen to all of the songs on Shh!’s YouTube playlist.
