Release Day Blitz - The Tower Princess by Shonna Slayton

In honor of Tell a Fairy Tale Day, author Shonna Slayton’s new book is on sale on the Kindle for 99c. This original fairy tale is a medieval Romeo and Juliet story with shades of Rapunzel.

Blurb

The townspeople call her the Tower Princess, but Gressa’s life is no fairy tale. She’s never understood why she’s been separated from the rest of the kingdom, but now that she’s older the pieces are coming together.

For too long she’s been trapped in her brother’s scheme to find a way through the magical wall dividing their kingdom in two. She doesn’t expect any help from the prince to the south, even if he did manage to bumble his way to her rescue. If she could pick anyone to form an alliance, it would be the squire she watches train from her window; he shows promise. But, confined to her tower, there’s nothing she can do…or is there?

One day a hole opens up in the Dividing Wall and with it, a chance for Gressa to change everything.

Excerpts:

The story starts with a boy and a girl. Meet Manny and Gressa as they begin their lives in a divided kingdom reigned over by two kings:

Meet Manny

The king knew the Panther stalked at the wall. He felt his enemy’s restlessness grow every day. He knew his son would be in grave danger. The Panther would have no heart for a baby. Could he make a double funeral? Would it be convincing? Then he could send his son into hiding—away from his family to be raised as a commoner.
Wishing he had his wife’s wise counsel, he collapsed into a chair. He knew now, more than ever, what a pearl he had in Maggie.
While he was mulling over these thoughts, the nursemaid approached him, wringing her hands.
“I ‘ave a sister, newly widowed. She bore a babe yestreen and ‘as no way to care for ‘em. Bring ‘er into the castle to raise her son like he wos the prince. A decoy, as it may.”
The king stared unblinking at the nursemaid. Could he put someone else’s babe at risk? He was shamed for even thinking it.
“’T’would be her ‘onor to serve the king in this way,” said the nursemaid, sensing the king’s concerns. “’Tis for the safety of the prince.”
“And where would my boy go?” asked the stricken king, studying the baby, marveling at his tiny ears. Grief flooded his mind.
Smiling wide, the nurse revealed her crooked teeth. “Thar be a fine tailor and his wife in town. They ‘ave not been able to ‘ave children, much like yerself. He wonts an apprentice. They would be most agreeable. And ‘is wife would be sure to hide the true nature of the wee babe.” She stroked the prince’s cheek.
The king nodded, relieved that he wouldn’t have to send his son away. He could watch him grow up. But what kind of relationship would they have? Could he risk not letting his son know he was the prince until he had grown into a man? Simon pressed his hand to his temple to stop the throbbing. Then the babe awoke, screwed up his face, and let loose a piercing wail. The king wished he could scream too. Instead, he handed the child to the nursemaid with all the ideas.

Meet Gressa

In North Morlaix, the cry of the eighth child born to Jorvik’s wife rang out. This time, a girl.
The king stared at the babe. He was so used to having sons that he felt a bit awkward. His wife, too was a little shocked.
“It’s…a girl?” The king set down the sword he had brought with him. He had given each of his seven sons a sword at their birth. What did one give a girl? A shield mayhap?
“We can’t call her Thorwald like we planned,” he said.
Ingrid laughed.
Jorvik had never heard his wife laugh before. Once she started, she couldn’t stop. Her mirth was catchy and soon Jorvik also broke out in joyful noise. The child’s birth was the beginning of other changes in North Morlaix.
After much debate and suggestions from every member of the family and the court, the babe was named Gressa, meaning “pearl.” This made the old nursemaid raise an eyebrow, but she kept her tongue silent.
No one stepped into the castle without a quick look in on Gressa. Presents piled up. Fancy linens and imported silks. Gold jewelry and precious gems. Not to mention grain and chickens from the townsfolk.
Ingrid kept company with plaiters to learn how to entwine Gressa’s hair when she grew a lock or two. The princes of North Morlaix came to coo and make funny faces at the baby. In all, Gressa brought out a softer side of her family. In everyone except the Panther.

Q&A

Why did you decide to write an original fairy tale?

This was a fun story for me. I’d been writing historical novels for a while and needed a story I could just write for fun and not have to spend so much time in research. This kingdom is made up. The time period is made up. And I’ve introduced new fairy creatures as well.

Where did you get the idea from?

I have a photo book on castles, and one of the castles featured is Burg Eltz in Germany. It’s a compact castle with these lovely towers, and while studying it, my imagination started down this path of a boy and girl being separated by a wall dividing their kingdom. Their parents are at war, and don’t want them to meet because they’re afraid they’ll fall in love.

How do you get the names of your characters?

Names have character, themselves, so I try to match the name with the vibe my characters are giving me. I tend to write about immigrants, so I’ll often start with their national origin. Then I go for the sound of the name, and then the meaning. In the Tower Princess I reveal the meaning of at least two of the characters’ names. Some names just hit you when you hear them. Don’t be surprised if we meet one day and I go crazy over your name and ask if I can use it in a book. It’s happened before.

Do you have a playlist when you’re writing?

Not on this book, but I do have an inspiration Pinterest board with some amazing images pinne here.

It dawns on me that I’ve never even seen Luc shirtless. When he straightens up and turns to face me, it also dawns on me why that is.

I knew he’d have a scar from his heart surgery. Common sense. It never occurred to me what it might look like, or that Luc might be self-conscious of it. It starts at his clavicle and runs straight down his chest, ending at just below his ribcage. It’s prominent. It’s unmissable. And I see him absently touch a hand to it like, yes, he’s aware this is the first time I’m seeing it and he doesn’t like it.

An ancient Hopi myth says people arrived on tiny silver pods that fell
from the sky.

But the truth is far more terrifying.

Two-hundred fifty-eight teens are sent from a dying Earth to a terraformed Mars as part of the Emergence Program, mankind’s last hope before solar flares finish off their planet and species. Among the brave pioneers are sixteen-year-old Joey Westen and her twin brother, Jesse.

After only minutes in space, something triggers a total ship lock down.

With the help of their roommates, the Matsuda twins (notorious hackers and shady secret-keepers), Joey and Jesse stumble onto an extremist plot to sabotage the Emergence Program.

But Joey and Jesse didn’t travel to the deepest pits of space and leave their mother behind to be picked off in a high-tech tin can. They’ll lie, hack, and even kill to survive the voyage and make it to Mars.

Excerpt:

Beads of sweat formed between Winslow’s palm and the device, but he held tight. All his screens, which provided invaluable data, sat as black as the infinite cosmos before him. Flying blind, in ancient throughways created by … only God knows who—it unsettled and disturbed the mind.

However, the bowed windshield provided him a spectacular view without the instrument panel aglow.
Leaning over, he searched for the orange glimmer of Earth, but after ninety minutes in hyper drive, the scorched planet was far from view. The bright streaks of distant stars overshadowed any hope of glimpsing home.

“Do you really think that woman can stop the … ” Natalia glanced around then leaned in to whisper, “attack.”

“We’ve made it farther than all the other expeditions. That gives me
hope,” he replied softly.

“We had a great run though, didn’t we?” Natalia smirked as she tucked a stray hair behind her ear.“Remember that time—”

“This sounds an awful lot like a goodbye speech, Kozlov.”

“Ooh, Kozlov,” Natalia drawled. “You haven’t called me by my last name since I was a cadet. Geez, you must be serious.”

“We have to have faith.” Winslow looked to the men and women stationed at the far end of the control room, then to the shining rod in his grasp. “The human race can’t end with us; we’ve come too far. We have to persevere.”

“You know. After you told me about the other ships, I almost resigned from this voyage.” Natalia turned her chair from the control panel, facing him. “Do you know why I didn’t?”

Winslow clicked his chair around, staring at Natalia. A pink tinge
flushed her cheeks, her nails drumming out a steady beat on the armrest. She looked so anxious. Risky test flights, solar flares, bombs, nothing shook her nerve so far. Yet right now, her lips trembled.

“I’m in love with you, Gerald. If we’re gonna die in thirty minutes, I thought you should at least know that.” Her eyes darted away, and she repositioned her seat.

His jaw dropped open. He tried to speak, but his words bunched in his throat. Natalia stole a glance and a hard thump rattled his chest. He never noticed that sparkle in her blue eyes, which gleamed against her olive skin, until now.

A wisp of brown hair fell from behind her ear, and his heart skipped faster. He looked to his watch, his hold on the jammer tightening. Only twenty minutes left. What-ifs and could-bes didn’t much matter anymore, these were most likely his final moments.

He unfastened his safety belt, scooting to the edge of his seat. A smile threatened to invade his lips, but he held a straight face. The shuffle of crewmembers faded as he pulled the lever beneath Natalia’s seat, spinning her chair to gaze upon her face. An unexpected flutter ran through his stomach with her stare, her smirk. It drew him in, brought him to one knee. Their lips found
each other, and he kissed her, softly, under the glow of starlight.

Cassie and Laney fancy themselves amateur ghost hunters. When a carnival comes to town, Cassie embraces the chance to try something new.

Carnival workers watch the girls with a collective gaze that ignites in Laney a dark and dangerous fascination, leaving Cassie unnerved.

It's not just their age or the unsettling way they stare. There is something in the shifting of their skin and the way their features seem to change in the shadows.

Cassie can's shake this sickening feeling that there's more to the carnival than meets the eye.

When townspeople suddenly start dying and bloody warnings appear around town, Cassie is lured into a nightmare where trees whisper and strange, shape-shifting men haunt the backwoods she once hunted for ghosts with her best friend.

Then Laney goes missing, and only Cassie can get her back. But the creatures of the trees aren't simply going to hand Laney over to Cassie without getting something in return.

Excerpt:

He didn't hesitate, didn't speak. His hands raked up from her hips,
settling warmly on her waist, and he brought his lips purposely to hers, pressing her hard back into the tree. She squeaked, surprised and shocked at his directness—and more shocked at her response.

She didn't protest, and he took full advantage of the gasp she emitted as he nipped at her lower lip. The unnatural heat that had been plaguing her flared into life, searing her insides. He wasn't gentle, and he wasn't slow; he angled against her, his whole body pressing to hers. His mouth slid open, coaxing hers to do the same, and his tongue slid along her own. She felt muddled, confused. It was delusive, fast, and unexpected. She was frozen.

But he wasn't. His hands came around her, stroking under her jacket and up her back, his fingers dancing lightly as he drew them down her sides. His kisses were heady, more intoxicating than the beer she had, and her brain shut down. She kissed him back, hard and without thought. He pulled back from her mouth, trailing his lips over her jaw and to her neck, tracing the bounding lines of
her arteries with the tip of his tongue. A sigh escaped without her permission, and she felt his lips curl into a lazy smile before he dragged them up to seal over her own again.

Her mind was hazy, but through the haze came a burst of noise. A moan, loud and distinct cut through the silence of the forest. She started, stiffening in his arms. He ignored it, his hands tracing up her body and landing on her neck. His fingertips traced intricate patterns on her skin as he angled her head into the kiss. She felt weak, unable to stand on her own, but his body kept her securely pinned to the tree, and she didn't move.

Someone, someone nearby, whimpered. Cassie's eyes flew open. She didn't even remember closing them. Her breath came sharp and fast; she was gasping into the kiss. He broke free again, bending back to the column of her throat, his fingers leaving her neck and trailing slowly and seductively down her front. Her head fell back to the tree, and she was blinking fast. It was unreal. It felt so unreal. He was everywhere, surrounding her. Her mind was clouded and her thoughts scattered. There was nothing, nothing at all but his
lips and his body and his warm, warm hands. She shuddered underneath him, and he stooped lower, yanking the edge of her jacket back and trailing his tongue over her exposed collarbone.
