Synopsis:

What if the next new drug was you? Raleigh’s body produces a drug that could define the future of medicine if the dangerous world surrounding it doesn’t kill her first.

Eighteen-year old Raleigh Groves can sense disease in others and is suffering from her own unexplained illness as well. After years and dozens of doctor visits, she has given up hope of ever finding a cure, let alone a diagnosis. Then she meets a man who explains that her talent and curse are linked. Her body produces a drug, Lucidin, which allows her to sense others. She’s rare, and the drug she makes is coveted.

Rho has spent the last few years on the run. The Lucidin that is racing through his system makes him a target. Surrounded by addicts and dealers on one side and scientists and doctors on the other, he has to rely on his wits and his team to stay one step ahead. So far he has stayed afloat, but some of his brothers haven’t been as lucky.

As Rho and Raleigh collide they must face the perilous world of Lucidin together. Nothing is black-and-white and Raleigh must decide where her alliances lie. Sometimes the hardest heart to sense is your own.

Purchase:

When did you start writing?

I have been writing my whole life. At four I made my first picture book and by the age of ten was writing short stories.

What makes you want to write?

I love to share, tell, and think up stories.

Do you ever get writer’s block and what do you do to get over it?

Very rarely do I get writer’s block because I usually am working on two projects at once. If one of them is slow going I swap to the other.

Do you have a special way of going about writing?

I like to listen to music when I write. I also like to switch up where I write. Sometimes being in a new place can be inspirational.

Do you have any works in progress?

I have two works in progress. The first is the sequel to The Designed called The Synthetics. The other is a book about troubling memories.

What are your hobbies?

My hobbies are swimming, hiking, and reading.

How did you choose the character names for The Designed?

My main character is Raleigh, and she is named after the capital of North Carolina. My friend was pregnant with her second daughter, her first being named Charlotte. Charlotte is a city in North Carolina, and I told her she name her second after the capital. She didn’t end up using Raleigh, so I did. The others are named after Greek letters (for good reason) so they were easier to choose.

Who is your favourite character in The Designed?

I think my favorite character is probably Brent, even though he is a bit character. He is witty and fun to write.

How did you get the idea for The Designed?

I was in pharmacy school and we were learning how some of our medications used to be taken from animals (and some still are). It got me to wondering what would happen if a vital drug only could be made in a human model and not synthesized. Would we design people to specifically make it? From there I thought up a cool drug and put together the book.

What was your favourite part of writing The Designed?

My favorite part of writing it was coming up with the drug, Lucid. As a pharmacist I enjoyed being able to made an interesting drug with the characteristics that I wanted. Really, Lucid is a character in its self.

What are you currently reading?

The Demon Under the Microscope by Thomas Hager.

What is your favourite book?

The Fountainhead.

Who is your favourite author?

Agatha Christie.

What is your favourite film?

Amelie.

What is your favourite TV show?

The Amazing Race.
