Excerpt:

“Drifter.” His voice is deep and rich beneath the scorn. “I should have known.”

I won’t rise to that bait. Everyone knows Earthmakers hate my kind. I demand, “What are you doing here?”
He stares his refusal at me.
Now that I’m so close, I notice that his eyes are the strangest I’ve ever seen. Their color shifts: blue to green, then streaked with brown, then edged with gold. They shift to green again. I frown. “What’s wrong with your eyes?”
His jaw clenches, and his eyes turn blue, as an Earthmaker’s should be. He stills as though he’s under control now, but the pulse beating hard under my knife and the tension of his lean, muscled body tells me his control is thin.
He says steadily, “What do you want with Count Martel, an enemy of the king?”
I press the blade harder and feel a wash of satisfaction when he winces. “I’m asking the questions.”

About the Author

I’m Katherine Hurley, author of The Griever’s Markseries. Book 1 will be out in November 2014 and Book 2 in spring of 2015.
My love of myth and legend led me inexorably into fantasy, and I have no intention of leaving. Ever. I grew up riding horses and finally, finally, finally have one of my very own. (I’m hoping Astarti will get some quality horse time at some point, but Drifters don’t really need horses. Hmm.) I’m also an avid (but amateur!) mountain biker and whitewater kayaker.

I was born in New Mexico, grew up in Kansas, got my MFA in Michigan, and now live in West Virginia. The most beautiful place I’ve ever been is New Zealand.

Excerpt:

There’s a moment in everyone’s life when they realize that there’s no turning back to their childhood. When they realize that they have at once graduated to adulthood. From what I knew about life before the blast, this moment looked different for everyone. Whether it was getting their first job, getting their driver’s license, having their first kiss, graduating high school, graduating college, buying a home, or having a child, one thing was constant throughout: This moment hardly ever happened to 10 year olds.
Standing with the gun in my right hand and the knob in my left, I knew there was no turning back. Henry and Ellie could last another day, but my childhood was gone. So I swung the door open like I knew I had to, and charged.
I dove beneath the kitchen table for cover, but quickly realized the shots weren’t coming from inside. They were just outside the window, in the yard. I crawled over the sticky floor, dried blood lifting onto my palms, until I reached the back door and crept into the sunroom.
I remembered what my mom told me: I had to be brave. I took a breath, and imagined it wasn’t real. This is a game, I told myself. Just a video game or something. So I opened the door just enough to slip my body through and let myself outside.
Freezing cold from the darkness mixed unevenly with burning gusts from the flames, and everything was shadowed in Halloween colors. From our back patio, I saw past the cornfield and across Route 30, and I had to catch my breath at the sight of it: an entire hillside of houses and businesses swallowed in flames. The only thing that spreads more quickly than panic is fire, and our entire community had been consumed in both. In the light of the fires, I could see black outlines of people running and looting, their shadows stretching their misdeeds over the highway.

Excerpt:

From the First Scene, Chapter One.

My troubles all started the day my grandma discovered my grimoire in her armoire. I’d flung it in when she’d called up the stairs for me to “hightail it out to the barn” and feed the lambs.
Like I’m supposed to know what “hightail it” means. Me, Cilla Swaney, world-traveling military brat. Though I spoke four languages, I hadn’t yet mastered my native Southern.
Until three weeks and five days ago, I’d only visited I’m-So-Bored-I-Think-I’ll-Die-ville, North Carolina, on the few―and thank God brief―furloughs Dad got between posts. Now I was stuck here.
Forever. Or at least until Mom closed on our new house in Chapel Hill, which seemed to be taking forever.
I’d finally cornered the littlest of Grandma’s late-born lambs, Lemon Balm, between the wood fence and the red barn wall, when up at the house the back screen door squeaked, and G-ma’s voice rang out loud and strident, “Priscilla Lou Swaney. You have some explaining to do!”
I jerked, and warm milk bathed the back of my hand as LB hungrily nuzzled the emptying bottle I still held to his mouth. All three names. Oh mein Gott, was I in for it.
My stomach did an odd jittery thing as I peeked around the side of the barn. G-ma’s brown and green tie-dye skirt swirled about her mucked-up barn boots as she crunched down the gravel path leading from the ancient white farmhouse. Her wire headset plugged into the cordless phone that was clipped in its permanent position at her waist flapped irritably with her movements.
That’s another thing. Why couldn’t I have a grandma like the other American kids I knew? You know, a normal one—a gray-haired old lady who would put on a red hat and go out to gossip with her
retired friends. Or better yet, one who would buy me all the things my parents wouldn’t and let me veg out all day eating junk food. No, mine had to be some sort of leftover hippie who ran her own organic farm and forced me to drink all these vile fermented beverages she brewed up in her kitchen. Really.
“Let me call you back about the raw cheese, Hector. I’ve got to deal with a little problem first.”
Stopping right in front of me—the “little problem”—and not a bit out of breath, G-ma clicked off her phone and thrust the dog-eared pages of Teen Magick into my face. The book almost, but unfortunately not fully, covered the narrow-eyed look in her green eyes. Eyes the same color as mine; the only thing we had in common.
She shook the grimoire in my face. “What is this nonsense?”
Panic gagged me. My fingers itched to snatch my new spell book from her, but that would have been a dead giveaway.
She thumbed through the first few pages. “‘A Witch’s First Grimoire.’ ‘Pox your Pimples.’ ‘Divine Tomorrow’s Test.’ ‘Ritual for Samhain.’ What are you doing with this trash?”
I’d been so thrilled when I’d found the tiny Spirit Rising bookstore while shopping with Mom near UNC. This book had called to me from the window display. If only I’d bought it after Mom had
closed on the house and we were no longer staying at G-ma’s.
“Uh.” I wracked my brain as I bent over the lamb, his soft head tickling where he rubbed against my bare legs below my cut-offs. “That…that’s a book I’m reading for research.”
“Research for what?” She waved at a buzzing fly, and I caught a whiff of the milk kefir she’d been fermenting earlier. “School doesn’t start for another week. And watch out! Lemon Balm is about to knock over the milk pail.”
I patted LB on his butt, sending him galloping off to the dry summer pasture while giving myself time to whip up a better explanation. “Well, see, before we left Dad in Izmir, he told me that one of his
new airmen claimed to be a Wiccan and asked me to look into it, see if he had any reason to be concerned.”
It wasn’t a lie exactly. I mean, Dad had voiced concern over this eighteen-year-old private I’d been hanging with. Of course, Dad had been freaking about my “seeing” a guy three years older. He’d
have really freaked if he’d known his airman was teaching me more about casting enchanted circles than giving heated glances. As if an older guy would notice a geek like me anyway.

After having lived with her husband in his homeland of Turkey for many years, she suddenly saw the world with new eyes and had to write about it.

Top 10 Favourite TV Shows

I have always loved TV and I do tend to watch a variety of things. There are so many awesome TV shows out there and with the invention of Netflix, I’m guilty of finding new shows and watching every episode in a matter of days. I love shows that inspire my writing and I find myself choosing more paranormal based shows that do just that. Here is a list of some of my favorites and the crazy reasons I watch them.

10. Salem- Because of the catchy Marilyn Manson theme song.

9. American Horror Story- To see which actors come back and what they are portraying next.

8. Bates Motel- The creepy chemistry of Norma and Norman intrigues me.

7. Misfits- The strange supernatural storm and because of Robert “Save me, Barry!” Sheehan.

6. Ghost Hunters- Because they tell me what an EVP is every episode. Love seeing the locations.

5. Ghost Adventures- Zak Bagans’ narrations are soothing.

4. The Vampire Diaries- No matter how annoying Elena is there’s always Damon and his gorgeous eyes.

3. The Originals- Klaus is my favorite villain ever and Elijah’s suits are perfect.

2. Lost- Black smoke monsters are cool and Sawyer is gorgeous.

1. The Golden Girls- No, it’s not paranormal, but I still laugh at all the jokes.

Review - The Infinite (Gates of Thread and Stone, #2) by Lori M. Lee

Title: The Infinite (Gates of Thread and Stone, #2)
Author: Lori M. Lee
Pages: 380
Publisher: Skyscape
Release date: 10th March 2015

Blurb from Goodreads:

The walls of Ninurta keep its citizens safe.

Kai always believed the only danger to the city came from within. Now, with a rebel force threatening the fragile government, the walls have become more of a prison than ever.

To make matters worse, as Avan explores his new identity as an Infinite, Kai struggles to remind him what it means to be human. And she fears her brother, Reev, is involved with the rebels. With the two people she cares about most on opposite sides of a brewing war, Kai will do whatever it takes to bring peace. But she’s lost her power to manipulate the threads of time, and she learns that a civil war might be the beginning of something far worse that will crumble not only Ninurta’s walls but also the entire city.

In this thrilling sequel to Gates of Thread and Stone, Kai must decide how much of her humanity she’s willing to lose to protect the only family she’s ever known.

My Review:

*I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to Amazon Publishing/Skyscape and NetGalley*

2/5 stars

After the death of Kahl Ninu, the city of Ninurta is in turmoil with rebels unhappy at the choice of new Kahl. Kai is worried that her brother, Reev, is involved with them.
Avan is now an Infinite and has no memories of his life before which hurts Kai every time she sees him. She tries to make him see what it is to be human.
Kai's ability to stop time has disappeared.
Then a messenger comes from another surviving city, Lanathrill, asking for aid.
Is Lanathrill hiding something from them?
Will Kai get her powers back?

Firstly I want to say how gorgeous the cover is. I mean just look at it! Beautiful!
For me The Infinite was disappointing. The plot didn't hold my attention at all and I often found myself skim reading. It was only around 70% when things started getting interesting. There was betrayal and some things that I didn't see coming but some that I did (they seemed so obvious I was surprised Kai didn't see them earlier).
Kai was more confident in this book and I felt sorry for her about Avan.
There was a love triangle in The Infinite but it wasn't a focal point and wasn't over the top. I actually think it was done quite well.
I did like learning a bit more about The Infinite and that the world was expanded into another city.

Overall I unfortunately found The Infinite disappointing.
