A teen rockstar has to navigate family, love, coming out, and life in the spotlight after being labeled the latest celebrity trainwreck in Jen Wilde’s quirky and utterly relatable novel.

As a rock star drummer in the hit band The Brightsiders, Emmy King’s life should be perfect. But there’s nothing the paparazzi love more than watching a celebrity crash and burn. When a night of partying lands Emmy in hospital and her girlfriend in jail, she’s branded the latest tabloid train wreck.

Luckily, Emmy has her friends and bandmates, including the super-swoonworthy Alfie, to help her pick up the pieces of her life. She knows hooking up with a band member is exactly the kind of trouble she should be avoiding, and yet Emmy and Alfie Just. Keep. Kissing.

Will the inevitable fallout turn her into a clickbait scandal (again)? Or will she find the strength to stand on her own?

Top 10 Songs To Listen To While You Read THE BRIGHTSIDERS

10. Rebel Rebel by David Bowie

One of my favourite scenes in THR BRIGHTSIDERS features Alfie dancing to Rebel Rebel to cheer Emmy up. I don’t want to give away too much more, but the song is special to them and it’s a really cute part of the book.

9. Palm Dreams by Hayley Kiyoko

I chose this song because of its lyrics about California and parties, but pretty much any Hayley Kiyoko song would be perfect for this book.

8. Piece of Me by Britney Spears

With lyrics like, I'm Miss American Dream since I was seventeen and I'm Mrs. Exta! Extra! this just in, this song about making headlines as a pop star couldn’t be more suited to this book. Emmy gets herself into more than one scandal throughout the story, and finds herself being constantly slammed by the media.

7. I Knew You Were Trouble by Taylor Swift

This break-up song about a rockstar who goes around shattering hearts is appropriate listening for certain chapters of this book. That’s all I’ll say about that.

6. Part of Me by Katy Perry

Emmy has a few toxic people in her life who only seem to want to tear her down to lift themselves up. She has to find ways to stand on her own and free herself from toxic relationships, and I can totally see her screaming this song at the top of her lungs during her tough moments.

5. Ever Since New York by Harry Styles

I don’t want to reveal too much, but the band take a trip to New York and…things happen. Things that stay with Emmy in deeply personal ways.

4. Make Me Feel by Janelle Monae

This song is fire. It’s a powerful queer anthem and I can definitely see Emmy rocking out to it either in her bedroom or on stage, and thinking about Alfie the whole time.

3. History by One Direction

Minibars, expensive cars, hotel rooms
And new tattoos, good champagne, and private planes
But we don't need anything
'Cause the truth is out

Need I say more?

2. Alfie’s Song by Bleachers

I mean, it’s called Alfie’s Song and the love interest in THE BRIGHTSIDERS is named Alfie. Plus, it’s super cute and the tune is amazing and it was written for Love, Simon. It’s just perfect for Emmy.

1. Paparazzi by Lady Gaga

How could I make a playlist for a book about a famous musician without including Lady Gaga? Paparazzi stalk Emmy wherever she goes, often making her life hell, so this song is a perfect match for THE BRIGHTSIDERS.
