Series: Dark Metropolis #1

Release date: June 17th 2014
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Cabaret meets Cassandra Clare - a haunting magical thriller set in a riveting 1930s-esque world.

Sixteen-year-old Thea Holder's mother is cursed with a spell that's driving her mad, and whenever they touch, Thea is chilled by the magic, too. With no one else to contribute, Thea must make a living for both of them in a sinister city, where danger lurks and greed rules.

Thea spends her nights waitressing at the decadent Telephone Club attending to the glitzy clientele. But when her best friend, Nan, vanishes, Thea is compelled to find her. She meets Freddy, a young, magnetic patron at the club, and he agrees to help her uncover the city's secrets-even while he hides secrets of his own.

Together, they find a whole new side of the city. Unrest is brewing behind closed doors as whispers of a gruesome magic spread. And if they're not careful, the heartless masterminds behind the growing disappearances will be after them, too.

Perfect for fans of Cassandra Clare, this is a chilling thriller with a touch of magic where the dead don't always seem to stay that way.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jaclyn Dolamore was homeschooled in a hippie sort of way and spent her childhood reading as many books as her skinny nerd-body could lug from the library and playing elaborate pretend games with her sister Kate.
She skipped college and spent eight years drudging through retail jobs, developing her thrifty cooking skills and pursuing a lifelong writing dream.
She has a passion for history, thrift stores, vintage dresses, David Bowie, drawing, and organic food.
She lives with her partner and plot-sounding-board, Dade, and two black tabbies who have ruined her carpeting.

When did you start writing?

Before I could write, my mom actually wrote down stories I would dictate to her. I still have this notebook! I told stories about telling bears and mice to "Scat!" By the time I was 5 I could write on my own--in a rudimentary way--and I never stopped. I am also, apparently, an anomaly among writers in that I still have pretty much every scrap I've ever written. Piles and piles of it. If anyone needs to research the creative development of children with bizarre and disturbing imaginations, you know where to find me.

What makes you want to write?

I have a quote saved from Sylvia Plath's diaries: "I love people. Everybody. I love them, I think, as a stamp collector loves his collection. ... I would like to be everyone, a cripple, a dying man, a whore, and then come back to write about my thoughts, my emotions, as that person." I don't actually want to be a dying man or a whore, but I do know just what she means. The best stories make me yearn to step out of my own skin and into someone else's, to see and experience someone else's view, feel their triumphs, and even sometimes their suffering. I keep telling stories because of the magic of making fictional people and places breathe.

Do you ever get writer's block and what do you do to get over it?

Oh, yeah. And it isn't an easy thing. It's taken me years of experience to really understand what causes writer's block and how to get over it. It usually falls into two kinds--a scene is just boring, and I need to either cut it or plow through it to get to the better stuff (usually, I try to cut it, unless it's very short transitional stuff), or I've made a wrong turn earlier on in the story and I have to go back and fix it. That's a trickier business and all I can say to beginning writers who get stuck is, if you're not excited to write, go back and look at choices you've made earlier and see if there's something you can change to make it exciting again, and don't be afraid to think very BIG.

Do you have a special way of going about writing?

I really don't. I eat lunch, sit myself down in my office, and get to work.

What are your hobbies?

I love junk hunting and vintage stuff...there's an auction house just a few minutes down the street from my house and I look forward to bimonthly auctions like crazy, and I also love thrift stores. I collect vintage dresses--I must have fifty of them by now, to say nothing of shirts and skirts and pants...I even have a 1920s wool bathing suit. I love sketching characters from my stories; I draw little comics when I have the time, which lately I haven't. And I'm a total foodie, I love to cook and talk about food incessantly and I've started gardening as well.

How did you choose the character names for Dark Metropolis?

Character names just come to me, at least for the main characters. Though Thea is named after Thea von Harbou, who wrote the screenplay for Fritz Lang's 1927 film Metropolis, and Frederick is an Anglicized Friedrich, which is Fritz Lang's actual name, so there is a bit of homage there. But I can't say I entirely planned that. Their names came first and then afterward I realized, well, that's perfect!

Do you have any works in progress?

I'm finishing up the sequel to Dark Metropolis and then I need to finish something I call my "magical Mafia" book which, if published, would be my first contemporary fantasy!

Who is your favorite character in Dark Metropolis?

In Dark Metropolis, it's Nan. If you include the sequel, it's Thea--she has more personal struggles in book 2.

Where did you get the idea for Dark Metropolis?

I love the film Metropolis and wanted to pay homage to it!

What was your favourite part of writing Dark Metropolis?

The creepy stuff. Sorry, Mom. ;)

What are you currently reading?

Theoretically, I have Eva Ibbotson's The Morning Gift in progress, but I've been working so hard on the sequel to Dark Metropolis that I don't even have room in my head for other people's stories right now and I've been spending all my downtime playing mindless puzzle games on the DS. =(

What is your favorite book?

Emily of New Moon by L. M. Montgomery.

Who is your favorite author?

L. M. Montgomery or Maud Hart Lovelace--tossup!

What is your favourite film?

Marie Antoinette.

What is your favourite TV show?

Of all time, Avatar: The Last Airbender. At the moment, maybe Brooklyn Nine Nine.

Quick-fire questions:

Chocolate or ice cream? I seem to have become lactose intolerant lately--O CRUEL WORLD--so, chocolate it is.
Paperback or ebook? Paperback.
Dogs or cats? Cats.
Go out or stay in? Stay in, usually, but I love it when I do go out for something fun!
Summer or winter? Hard choice! I hate heat but I LOVE summer produce, so I think I have to say summer just because...cherries and freshly picked corn!

Live for Me by Erin McCarthy
(Blurred Lines #2)
Publication date: June 23rd 2014
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

Synopsis:

The solace she sought…
In and out of foster care her whole life, Tiffany Ennis has never had space or privacy, so housesitting a mansion on the coast of Maine with only the absentee rich owner’s dog for company is pure bliss. But her peace is shattered when the injured owner returns to his compound unexpectedly.  Tiffany finds him to be sexy and intriguing, showing an interest in her that must be mocking, given that everyone’s always told her she’s plain, nothing special.
Becomes an affair she never expected…
Devin Gold, known in the music industry as Gold Daddy, is usually in New York City attending drop parties and having men and women alike throw themselves at him, and Tiffany wishes he’d stayed there.  There’s no reason for a top producer to hole up in Maine in the dead of winter, and every time she turns around he’s asking her prying questions.  She finds herself starting to enjoy their intellectual conversations and clever sparring matches, and in a hot minute she’s falling for him.  Even knowing that he’s a decade older, filthy rich, and could only want her for his momentary amusement.
Yet even when he hosts beautiful and confident guests from the city, he still seems to prefer her company, and is protective when odd things start happening around the house, threatening her safety.  But how far is Tiffany willing to go with a man who is still very much married, estranged wife or not, just to feel special?
And all the lines between past and present and right and wrong are blurred…

Aurelia Fray author of The Hunted Heart:

Hey everyone!
My name is Aurelia Fray. The fabulous JW invited me along to tell you all about my first ever published story, “The Hunted Heart,” which features in the steamy Hot Ink Press Anthology ‘Les Vaporistes.’
First things first, you ought to know that this is an 18+ collection of Steampunk related short stories. Although each tale gives its own unique twist to the genre, all of them are sure to excite and titillate the reader. I have had the pleasure of reading each of the contributions now and have personally enjoyed each one.

So what or who is The Hunted Heart?
This is the story of Xan and Lily. Set across eight chapters, our protagonists unveil themselves to the reader, each taking their turn to tell you a little more of their background and the tumultuous predicament they find themselves in. Xan is a specialist Mech (mechanically enhanced) bounty hunter sent on a mission to track down the villain, Magpie. Along the way he crosses paths with Lily, who not only treats him with respect only afforded to true Humes (completely biological/unenhanced humans), but also defends him openly. They believe their meeting is by chance but fate has much more to do with it.
For Lily, her meeting with Xan couldn’t come at a worse time. She has unfinished business to attend to, and Xan’s presence is a distraction. Lily remembers him, she knows both who he is and why he became a Mech and her bond with him is one of unspoken love…. Oh yeah and lust. Lots and Lots of descriptive lust. The story may only be 10,000 words but you get a mystery, a hunt, a lot of sex, some true love, an excruciating dilemma, and a great big steam-powered dirigible. What more could you ask for?

So why Steampunk?
I have always liked the costumes that people create for steampunk cosplay. The twisting of (what I always thought of as) Victoriana and Japanese Hirajuku fashions, with lots of metal, cogs, and some crazy inventive machinery thrown in, always enticed me. However it wasn’t until I read Bec McMaster’s Steampunk novels that I really appreciated the world of steampunk. My own story came out with a Victorian feel. I tried to play down the world they existed in, refusing to force feed the reader a steampunk environment or setting. My story was about two people and so they became its focus but through their eyes you unveil the world they live in. The reliance upon Mech’s and Droids, the class structure, the unbalanced lifestyles of Hume’s and Mechs, the weaponry and professions available to men and women in this world — all of this is presented to you in the things my protagonists think and say, or in the way they say it. I can only hope you feel emerged in their world whilst reading.

Now I suppose I ought to tell you a little about me?
There is not really much to say. Yeah I know boring huh? I live in London (UK) which is great. I describe myself as The Hyde side of a Jekyll and for the most part this is true. In my daily life I am little Ms Ordinary. (oooh do they have a Mr man/woman for that?) But in my writing I am a little bit naughty. I like to try anything at least once so don’t be surprised if you find I am tiptoeing in and out of genres.
I am an old romantic at heart but do like to play with my characters…. I think they would tell you that I am a mean mistress. Where my short stories focus on Erotic/Adult explorations by Novellas are more romantic. I have written and will soon be publishing a cheeky little series of novellas called the Tienimi Series so keep your eyes peeled for some HEA feel good reads.
On a very personal note, it must be said that I love cooking, like fictional bad boys, have never read the 50 shades series, dislike baked beans and hatehatehate shopping in Camden market on a weekend…look it up you will see why.

My Review:

*I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to Bloomsbury Publishing Plc (UK&ANZ)*

3/5 stars

Poppy works as a parlourmaid for the de Vere family but when her old teacher offers her the chance to help the war effort by becoming a VAD, a voluntary nurse, she accepts.
Meanwhile she tries to come to terms with her feelings for Freddie de Vere.

This was a good read even if it didn't grip me.
Poppy was a likeable protagonist and I enjoyed the historical aspect. The ending surprised me.

Overall this was a good read.

Promo Post - The Prophecy of Arcadia by M.H. Soars

Title: The Prophecy of Arcadia (Arcadian Wars, #1)
Author: M.H. Soars
Pages: 430
Release date: 17th January 2014

Blurb from Goodreads:

Being a teenager is tough, especially when you have to pretend to be something you’re not, and you’re in love with someone you shouldn’t. 115 years ago, a small planet called Arcadia was invaded by a vicious alien race and nearly destroyed. Cut off from their resources, the Arcadians turned to Earth for help. A group of Arcadian explorers discovered a Prophecy that claimed their salvation lay in the hands of two children from Earth. To ensure their safety, the Arcadian Council sent their most gifted youngsters to Earth to act as protectors. Samantha is one of them.

To succeed in her mission she must learn to control her Arcadian powers and keep her true identity from her best friend, and the girl she swore to protect, Alexia. But Samantha will soon realize that nothing is as it seems. Someone is trying to prevent the Prophecy from taking place and the prophecy boy hasn't been found yet. There is also a new drug circulating at school that is turning students into freakishly strong menaces.

To make matters worse, distractions keep getting in her way. Such as her love/hate relationship with her “cousin” Matthew. Or her confused feelings toward popular and mysterious Julian. She wants nothing more than to be free to live her life. But the survival of Arcadia depends on her and her friends. Free will is not an option.

About the Author

 Excerpt:

The conversation with Alexia had made me edgy. I walked toward the middle of the room, getting closer to Sam so I could have a clear look at her face. Even though I could tell she was trying to be stoic, I wanted to see if there was any sign that she still cared.
She closed the book she was pretending to read and sat up on her bed, looking at me like I was a nuisance. “You know I don’t want to talk to you. Why do you insist?”
She stood up suddenly, throwing her book on the bed with such force that it bounced and landed on the floor. My gaze followed the book’s trajectory and stayed on it for a few seconds as I tried to control my rampant emotions. Sam’s question hurt, and it subdued my anger a little. I took a deep breath and found her face again.
“Do you even have to ask? How many times do I have to say I’m sorry for what I did to you seven years ago?” My voice came out strained. I was sure she had noticed, but her angry posture didn’t change.
“Just tell me what really happened then. Just tell me, Matt.” She used my nickname — something she only did when she forgot she was supposed to be mad at me. Her voice had a pleading tone to it now, and it gave me hope. I looked into her eyes and saw all the hurt there. I wanted to tell her, I truly did, but I just didn’t know what to tell her.
“Sam,” I said as I carefully approached her. She gasped as I placed my hands on her arms. I looked deep into her eyes. That close, I could see little gray specks in a sea of dark blue. “I, I, can’t tell you,” I finally said.
She pushed me away from her with a powerful shove and I had to take several steps back to regain my balance. “You can’t, or you won’t, Matthew?”
Her own anger fueled mine. I didn’t want to lose it with Sam, but I also wasn’t able to walk away from this conversation now. She had balled her hands into fists, and that did something to me.
I hesitated to tell her the real reason because she probably wouldn’t believe me. But the swell of emotions within me just made me want to yell the truth at her. But how could I tell her that looking at her after the accident made me feel like the most despicable person in the world?
“I can’t tell you because I don’t know why!” I watched her expression change from anger to disbelief and back to anger again in a matter of seconds.
“Bullshit!” she said.
Sam was ready for a fight. Her muscles were tight with anger. The air around us felt charged, like the calm before the storm.
Ignoring the signs that we were escalating this argument beyond our control, I moved closer to her again. But now my movements had a menacing quality to them. I was letting her know she wouldn’t be able to push me away this time as I pleaded my case.
“Why can’t you believe me? Why is it so hard for you to trust me and forgive me?” My temper was rising, and I was starting to feel feverish. I opened and closed my hands, trying to control the rage boiling inside of me. My entire body shook and I knew I had awakened the Phoenix. It didn’t take much these days. Sam had the power to evoke feelings in me that I would rather keep buried.
She took a few steps back until she reached the edge of her bed and couldn’t retreat further. “Because you won’t trust me!”
