Cover Reveal - The Sowing by Tamara Mataya

The Sowing by Tamara Mataya
(Moondreamer Chronicles, #1)
Publication date: July 21st 2015
Genres: New Adult, Urban Fantasy

Synopsis:

Twenty-first birthday? Check.
Strange new powers? Check.
Getting through this heinous WTF-ery alive? I’ll get back to you.

Learning she’s Fae and has powers should have been the coolest day of Syxx’s life. Instead, she’s plunged into a decades-long battle of free will vs survival. Wrong place at the wrong time? Understatement of the century. The Fae Council has brought hundreds of reluctant Fae to the city to participate in The Sowing—a creepy traditional breeding ceremony.

No one has ever dared openly challenge the Council, but a secret resistance movement has been gaining momentum. Syxx is a Moondreamer—a rare type of Fae that can make wishes come true and will things into being. The Resistance believes Syxx has the power to overthrow the Council, but her untamed abilities are still developing.

With her new friends—a sexy half-incubus and a sweet leprechaun—pushing her forward, Syxx steps into the role of revolutionary. She’s got three options: Submit (no!), die (hell no!), or start a revolution.

*Please note: The Sowing contains a graphic attempted rape scene that may trigger some readers.*

This is an Urban Fantasy with a romantic twist, and though it’s a different genre than some of you are used to reading from me, it’s got the same heat levels you’d expect!

AUTHOR BIO

Tamara Mataya is currently a librarian; she lurked there for so long recommending books to patrons and shushing people, that she suspects they only hired her so it would be less creepy. Now she's armed with a name tag, and a thin veneer of credibility. She's also a musician with synaesthesia - which isn't an issue until someone plays a wrong note, which makes her want to squirm inside out. It makes for a good live show.

AUTHOR BIO

K. Makansi is the pen name for the writing triumvirate consisting of Amira, Elena, and Kristina Makansi. Two sisters and their mother, the three women developed a passionate interest in science fiction as a way to write about issues of food sovereignty and food justice. Elena is pursuing a degree in environmental studies at Oberlin College in Ohio, and will graduate in May of 2014. Amira was a history student at the University of Chicago whose day job working in the cellar of a winery (and constantly being splattered with wine) keeps her busy when she’s not writing. And Kristy owns and operates Blank Slate Press, an independent publishing company based out of St. Louis, and is a partner at Treehouse Publishing Group, a company providing editorial and design services to aspiring authors. When not writing or reading, the three can be found having animated discussions around the dinner table, sharing a good bottle of wine, or taking long walks in the park eagerly plotting out their next book.

3.5/5 stars

Remy Alexander left the capital of the Okarian Sector with her family to join the Resistance after her sister was killed in a classroom massacre.
Three years later, Remy lives in an underground Resistance base and finds information to the reason behind her sister’s murder.

Back in the capital, Valerian Orlean, son of two important figures in the Okarian Sector and the boy that Remy had loved, is given the task of hunting down Resistance members.
Vale soon discovers dark secrets that make him reconsider his position.

The Sowing is set in a post-apocalyptic world which we learn a bit about but I would have liked there to be more details about the destruction of the Old World and then the establishment of the Okarian Sector.

One thing I really liked about this book was that science was a big theme.
As someone with an interest in the sciences, particularly Biology, I found it very interesting and I liked the fact that it played such an important role in the storyline.
I also found the technology intriguing, especially the idea of sonic grenades.

Apart from the prologue which is told from Remy’s sister, Tai’s, point of view, The Sowing is told from Remy and Vale’s perspectives.
It was interesting to read as they both discovered things and changed throughout the book.
They were both likeable characters as were their friends.

I found the middle of the story to be a bit dull but it picked up towards the end and was so gripping that I didn’t want to put the book down.

Overall this was a good read with intriguing elements.
