Sixteen-year-old
Nina Kane lives in a future where a war with demons has led to the Church being
the governing body. Possessions are rare nowadays and the Church has all but
defeated the enemy... or so they say.
Nina has
enough to worry about looking after her younger sister, Melanie, and trying to
scrape by thanks to their absentee mother. Then Melie reveals a secret that
will change any future plans Nina had. As if that wasn't bad enough Nina learns
that she has an ability that means she will be hunted by both sides.
Can Nina
trust the mysterious Finn who saved her life? Or his friends who are on the
run?
What if
there is more to the Church than there seems?
The
Stars Never Rise was an intriguing read.
The idea
of demons taking over and possessing people was interesting and I thought this
was a good starting point for the series.
I liked
Nina and felt sorry for her having to grow up so quickly and look after her
sister. She was relatable and coped really well with all the revelations. I
also liked Melanie, Finn and his friends.
The plot
was good overall and there were some things I didn't see coming but I wasn't
gripped. Not a lot seemed to happen but the point of this book, I'm guessing,
was to set up the series.
The
romance happened a bit quickly for me but I liked that it wasn't your everyday
romance.
Overall
this was an intriguing, enjoyable read and a promising start to the series.
