Blog Tour + Review + Giveaway - Withering Hope by Layla Hagen

Find the tour schedule here.

Withering Hope by Layla Hagen
Publication date: January 19th 2015
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Synopsis:

*This will be a STANDALONE CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE.*

Aimee’s wedding is supposed to turn out perfect. Her dress, her fiancé and the location—the idyllic holiday ranch in Brazil—are perfect.

But all Aimee’s plans come crashing down when the private jet that’s taking her from the U.S. to the ranch—where her fiancé awaits her—defects mid-flight and the pilot is forced to perform an emergency landing in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.

With no way to reach civilisation, being rescued is Aimee and Tristan’s—the pilot—only hope. A slim one that slowly withers away, desperation taking its place. Because death wanders in the jungle under many forms: starvation, diseases. Beasts.
As Aimee and Tristan fight to find ways to survive, they grow closer. Together they discover that facing old, inner agonies carved by painful pasts takes just as much courage, if not even more, than facing the rainforest.

Despite her devotion to her fiancé, Aimee can’t hide her feelings for Tristan—the man for whom she’s slowly becoming everything. You can hide many things in the rainforest. But not lies. Or love.

Withering Hope is the story of a man who desperately needs forgiveness and the woman who brings him hope. It is a story in which hope births wings and blooms into a love that is as beautiful and intense as it is forbidden.

*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to Xpresso Book Tours and Layla Hagen*

3/5 stars

Aimee is on a private plane to Brazil where she is going to marry Chris, her fiancé and best friend. But the plane doesn’t make it to Brazil. Instead, Aimee ends up in the middle of the Amazon rainforest with only the pilot, Tristan, and the Amazon’s dangerous inhabitants for company. With low food supplies, Aimee and Tristan must try and survive until they are rescued. But can they endure in a place filled with the potential disease, starvation and animal attacks?
Throughout all this, Aimee is consumed with guilt as she struggles to come to terms with her growing feelings for Tristan.

Withering Hope is a thought-provoking read filled with learning to let go of the past and learning to hope.

Aimee was a good protagonist although it did take me a while to warm to her. At the beginning, before the plane crashed, it seemed to me that the author set Aimee up to seem like a control freak who wouldn’t cope well being stuck in the middle of nowhere, but Aimee was strong and coped very well. I felt so sorry for her as she struggled with the overwhelming guilt of her feelings for Tristan and I liked that it wasn’t insta-love, that her feelings grew over time.

Tristan was a complicated character who was haunted by his past. After being in the army, Tristan had post-traumatic stress disorder and his marriage broke down. Tristan had always had feelings for Aimee but he’d kept them hidden. As a result of his time in the army, Tristan has bad nightmares which only Aimee can stop, which I thought was sweet. I liked Tristan and was glad that he was able to overcome the guilt that caused him to have the nightmares. It was lucky that Tristan had survival training otherwise they probably wouldn’t have lasted in the rainforest.

It took me a while to get into the book and I enjoyed the second half a lot more. The writing style was good and, while it didn’t feel like a lot happened, I was interested to see what happened and wanted to read on.

I was relieved at the happy ending – for a moment I wasn’t sure there would be one! There are two epilogues which I thought were a good touch, although the second one had me in tears.

Overall this was an enjoyable read.

Found in Us (Lost, #2) by Layla Hagen
Publication date: July 24th 2014
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

Synopsis:

**This can be read as a STANDALONE. The second book in the Lost series tells Jessica and Parker’s story.**

All Jessica wants -as a college graduate — is to be a good girl. She landed the job of her dreams at a museum and is trying to eliminate temptations. No more short skirts (when she can help it). No wild parties. And no men.

She particularly excels at that last thing. . .

Until her path crosses Parker’s. Again. Jessica remembers the last time their paths crossed very well. She was left with a seriously bruised ego. She knows it would be best to avoid him altogether. But the charming Brit makes it hard for her to elude his electrifying pull. He is as irresistible as he is captivating.

And enigmatic.

Because underneath the sleek Armani suit and the sweet British accent that makes her crave his touch, Parker isn’t the perfect gentleman everyone thinks he is.

He’s exactly what Jessica doesn’t want, but desperately needs.
A bad, bad boy.

Book Blitz + Giveaway - Lost in Us by Layla Hagen

Lost in Us by Layla Hagen
Publication date: February 17th 2014
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

“OH MY GOODNESS. This book was excellent. There were absolutely no reasons to give this novel less than five stars. I was not expecting this. Lost in Us is a New Adult Romance and it is COLLEEN HOOVER good! Yes, I said it - you could put this book up against the leading New Adult Romance authors and it would hold its own.” J.P.Grider, author of The Honor Trilogy

“Layla blew me away with her début novel Lost in Us. I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this book and by the end of the first chapter I was hooked. Funny, emotional and heart wrenching.” Shona Reid, reviewer at Fiona’s Book Review Blog

Synopsis:

Serena has learned to live with her past, locking her secrets and nightmares deep inside her. But when her boyfriend of six years abruptly leaves her, she’s catapulted back into pain, nursing a broken heart. When indulging in mountains of chocolate doesn’t work, Serena decides the best way to deal with her shattered heart is to indulge in something else. A rebound . . .

The night she swaps her usual Sprite for tequila, she meets James. The encounter is breathtaking.
Electrifying.
And best not repeated.

James is a successful entrepreneur in Silicon Valley. A man who has amassed a fortune by taking risks. A man who has shunned commitment completely, and still does. He’s the exact opposite of Serena. But sometimes opposites attract. Sometimes they give in to burning passion. Sometimes opposites are perfect for each other.

James is everything her damaged soul could want. His kisses are intoxicating, his touch out of this world. He makes her forget. He grants her peace from her pain. But as they grow closer, Serena discovers she isn’t the only one with a past. James carries the scars of a past much darker than hers. One that has left him damaged, hurt, and wary of love. A past that gives him the power to shatter her.

Now James and Serena must find a way to mend one another. Or risk losing each other forever.

Q&A
Random facts about me and Lost in Us:

* James was initially called Liam. . .because I had a crush on Liam Hemsworth. I got over it in the meantime (am now crushing on his brother Chris) :-D
* I love chocolate as much as Serena does. Unfortunately I can’t get away with eating as much of it as she does.
* I wrote a *certain* steamy scene on a piece of paper—on the back of which I then printed an official letter. Which I sent. Oh, the joy of being a writer :)

Excerpt:

My heart throbs against my ribcage as I put one palm on his chest and then the other, not quite meeting his eyes, gazing at the top button of his shirt instead. His heart drums under my fingers, with a lightning-quick rhythm that matches my own. I bite my lip and close my eyes. Somehow, I think I will find the courage I seek easier, if I let the darkness behind my eyelids guide me, instead of the image of him. I take a deep breath—his intoxicating ocean and musk scent filling me. The skin on my fingers prickles, as I slide my fingers upward, touching the warm skin on his neck. Now that my eyes are closed, all my other senses are awake, ravaging me. I lean into him slowly, very slowly. I wish he'd take mercy on me and take the lead, because kissing him seems to require a different kind of courage.
I find his lips before I find the courage.
