Of Delicate Pieces (Of Breakable Things)
By A. Lynden Rolland

Publication Date:  November 10, 2015
Publisher:  Month9books

Settling into her second year of death, Alex is ready to explore her limitless mind in an afterworld that changes each day, but she still isn’t resting in peace.
The ‘gifted’ are humans who see spirits and have the same extraordinary mental powers, though they aren’t considered equals. Centuries ago, Alex’s family led the movement to keep the living and dead separated, but the gifted believe Alex is a reincarnation of their slain civil leader. When they begin to break down the barriers that protect the city, the afterworld becomes dangerous and vulnerable to exposure. The living and dead both want to use Alex for their own gain, but what they don’t realize is that neither side will want her when they find out who she really is.
In the afterworld, nothing stays buried for long.

OF DELICATE PIECES is the follow-up to A. Lynden Rolland's OF BREAKABLE THINGS.

A captivating debut about the fragility of life, love, and perspective.

When Chase dies tragically, Alex embraces her own mortality. What she didn’t expect was that she’d have to make a choice: forget the years of pain and suffering once and for all, or linger as a spirit and get another chance at life and love.

Alex doesn’t hesitate to choose; she’d follow Chase anywhere. But the spirit world is nothing like she expected, and Alex finds she's forced to fight for her life once more. For even in a world where secrets are buried much deeper than six feet under, a legacy can continue to haunt you—and in a place this dangerous, no one is resting in peace.

What Inspired Me to Write My Book

Thank you so much for hosting me and Of Delicate Pieces!

Of Breakable Things, the first book in the series, is about a girl transitioning into the afterworld. It’s about the mind becoming free and spirits seeing and doing things that are impossible for the living. I couldn’t imagine that when we die our knowledge, our emotions, our love would just disappear into thin air. It has to go somewhere; maybe sometimes it’s powerful enough to create a projection of the former body. An apparition.

There’s so much more that I wanted to do and explain in a mentally manipulated world for Of Delicate Pieces.  Alex sees new things because her mind opens to impossibilities: ladders leading into the sky, rowboats in the fog, clouds on strings, distorted buildings, mines made of memories.

See my Pinterest for visual images.

I always intended to continue the story with the details I had to take out of the first book. There are unanswered questions when Of Breakable Things ends, so what inspired me to write Of Delicate Pieces? Readers. My readers have had plenty of questions for me:

What about the living?

Readers wanted more of Liv, my only living character. And I’m glad because her role is bigger in this book. At the end of Of Breakable Things, Liv sees Alex and Skye escaping into the woods. Why? Because Liv is gifted, and the ‘gifted’ are a major factor in Of Delicate Pieces.

Who are the ‘gifted?’

The living call them witches, but really their powers are just mental strength. In a nutshell, the gifted have the same ingenious minds as the dead even though they still have bodies. Besides Liv, there’s Professor Duvall, the afterworld’s famous witch, and Sephi Anovark.

Why does Alex look like Sephi Anovark?

Sephi is the afterworld’s murdered prophet. She could see bits and pieces of the future and the afterworld government used her in death as the American government did in life. People (alive and dead) fear what they don’t understand, and a power like predicting the future isn’t easy to accept. Although Alex looks like Sephi Anovark, her relation isn’t what you think, and those answers are provided in Of Delicate Pieces (many of those answers come from someone who no longer lives within the barriers of the city… Jonas).

What happens to Jonas??

He’s such a jerk, but so many readers love him. Jonas doesn’t make an appearance until a few chapters in, but he’s still an active character. He becomes a renegade, running off with a group of spirits who don’t follow the rules of the afterworld, but in doing so, he is able to learn things that the government doesn’t allow newburies to know.

What about Chase and Alex?

They are finally together, but Alex’s background creates a whole new set of problems. Spirits are curious about her (some in a good way and some in a bad way). Chase, of course, is wary of curious people and their crazy intentions, especially because Chase can see the colors of their emotions surrounding them.
