Shattered Veil by Tracy E. Banghart
(The Diatous Wars #1)
Publication date: February 28th 2014
Genres: New Adult, Science Fiction

Synopsis:

For Aris, a talented wingjet pilot, war means sacrificing everything: her home, her name, her face—and the one promise she swore she’d never break.

In the small village of Lux, everyone flies wingjets, but nobody flies them like Aris Haan. When she’s not dancing through the skies, she’s spending every minute with Calix, whom she’s loved since childhood. They plan to Promise, but instead he is sent to defend their dominion against a bloody invasion. Determined not to lose him, Aris follows, joining an underground network of women inside the male-only military. Using secret technology that allows her to pass as a man, she becomes “Aristos”, a Flyer in a search-and-rescue unit.

As Aris grows stronger on the battlefield and more comfortable in her guise as Aristos, her personal mission becomes less and less clear. When she and her enigmatic commander, Major Vidar, uncover an astonishing conspiracy that could destroy everything, she must make a choice that will determine not only the fate of her heart, but the future of her dominion.

 Above her the world exploded.

“Can you fly?” A voice shouted in her ears.

Could she fly? Flying was all she could do, all she was. If Aris couldn’t fly, she was nothing.

She nodded.

Arms shoved her into the cabin of a wingjet. Her hands were on the controls. She felt the paddles beneath her bare feet. She should have boots on. Where were her boots?

The warmth of another body filled the seat beside her. The shield closed.

Noise exploded in front of her. Silhouetted in the bright lights, an army stood. Solagun fire flashed.

“Now!”

The wingjet rose, perfectly vertical, and then she shot forward, into the clump of men. Dull thuds echoed along the bottom of the jet. Distant screams. She flicked her hand and the jet twisted, gaining speed and height until they were spinning up and into the night.

For a while, flashes and booms exploded beneath her, and she spun and dipped and whirled. Through the dark, through the silence, she danced.

Eventually, the light died and then it was just the black.

She glanced at the nav map; a forest was blooming before them, ridges of trees and barren land reaching up towards her. The squiggles of land mass went hazy, fading slowly in and out.

“Please,” she whispered, her hands loosening their grip on the controls. “You need to take over…I’m…I’m…”

I’m nothing, she thought as the darkness claimed her.
