Vicki Lemp Weavil was raised in a farming community in Virginia, where her life was shaped by a wonderful family, the culture of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and an obsession with reading. Since obtaining her undergraduate degree in Theatre from the University of Virginia, she’s gone on to acquire two masters degrees, living in places as diverse as New York City and rural North Carolina. She’s currently the library director for a performing an visual arts university. Vicki loves good writing in any genre, and has been known to read seven books in as many days. Jackie Morse Kessler grew up in Brooklyn, NY, with a cranky cat and overflowing shelves filled with dolls and books. She has a bachelor’s degree in English and American Literature, and yet she’s never read any Jane Austen (with or without zombies). She also has a master’s degree in media ecology. (The living study of technology and culture. Which is cool, but she still can’t figure out how to use Tweetdeck.)

Jackie spends a lot of time writing, reading, and getting distracted by bright and shiny new ideas. (She just came up with a new idea right now.) She has a weakness for chocolate and a tendency to let her cat take over her office chair.

"What are you staring at?" She drops her gaze.

"You."

"Why? Do I have food on my face?"

I put my index finger under her chin and bring her gaze back up again. "I'm staring at you because I like what I see. That's all."

She leans forward and stops a breath away from my lips. "I like what I see, too." She breaches the gap between us and kisses me.

I cup the back of her head, and she lets go of the sheet covering her torso. Her warmth radiates through me and stirs something down below again. My hand skims the underside of her breast as our kiss becomes something more, something vital.

"Bas, my parents are probably home by now. I gotta go," she says against my lips.

"Humm?" I pretend I didn't hear her, moving my lips from her mouth to her chin, down her neck. Her breathing becomes shallow, but she pulls away, and her hands rest on my chest, keeping me from following her.

"Bas, I'm serious."

"Okay, okay." I rub my face, trying to dispel the lust fog clouding my brain. I shouldn't even attempt a second round with her now. She says she's not sore, but I'm pretty sure she will be in a couple of hours. I should let her recover.

Liv gets out of bed and searches for her clothes scattered on the floor. I lean back on my elbows and watch unapologetically.

"Stop staring, Bas." I see the corners of her lips twitch up.

"I can't help myself when you're parading that hot bod of yours in front of me."

She hits me with her t-shirt before putting it back on.

"So, what do you want for your birthday?" I ask.

"Bas, you don't need to give me anything."

I roll my eyes. "You're going to make it difficult, aren't you?"

"Of course." She smirks.

Fully dressed now, she comes to me and places her hands behind my neck. My arms encircle her waist, and I pull her closer.

"Thank you," I say.

Her eyebrows furrow, marring her lovely face. "For what?"

"For letting me be your first. Your first everything."

Her face relaxes, and she traces my hairline, all the way down to my jaw. "I wouldn't have wanted anyone else but you. Thank you for making my first everythings the most treasured experiences of my life."

"There are more firsts in your future, Liv. And I want to be there for all of them."

AUTHOR BIO

M. H. Soars always knew creative arts were her calling but not in a million years did she think she would become an author. With a background in fashion design she thought she would follow that path. But one day, out of the blue, she had an idea for a book. One page turned into ten pages, ten pages turned into a hundred, and before she knew, her first novel, The Prophecy of Arcadia, was born.

M. H. Soars resides in Florida with her husband and baby daughter. She is currently working on the Arcadian Wars series, and the Love Me, I'm Famous series.

When Will spoke, his voice was low, menacing, and far more terrifying than the blade he held to my neck. “I don’t appreciate being woken in the middle of the night to chase a Princess from the City around the bush, because she wants to stretch her legs.” He looked at me with disgust. “I should take you straight to Eton. It’s what you deserve.”

I shrugged my shoulders. Frankly, I’d rather he took me to Eton. I felt safer with him—he seemed the kinder of the two.

Will narrowed his eyes. “You have no idea. Eton’s not the saint you think he is. You’re just lucky it wasn’t him that found you.”

“Lucky?” My voice returned at Will’s insinuation. “I’m lucky to have a knife pointing at my throat?” I sounded far braver than I felt, and the annoyed look in Will’s eyes as I spoke sent a shimmer of satisfaction through me. There was no need for him to know how petrified I was right now.

“Be glad that’s all it’s doing.”

Something in his words didn’t ring true. “You won’t kill me, neither will Eton.”

Will raised an eyebrow as if considering, and a threatening smile grew on his lips. “True. But we don’t have to kill you to make our point.” The tip of his knife nicked my skin sending a trickle of blood dribbling down my neck.

 

About the Author

Hayley Barrett began writing in the aftermath of the devastating Christchurch earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 as a way of escaping from the ongoing terror of the natural disaster. Not totally happy with her efforts, in 2012 she commenced a novel writing course. Into Darkness, her first novel, is the result of the course and two years hard work.

Hayley lives in Rolleston, ten minutes south of Christchurch, New Zealand, with her husband and three children. When she isn’t driving her kids to their sports practices, games and other after school activities, she enjoys playing squash, relaxing in the sun and reading. Most days she wishes there were more hours available to spend writing
