THE LOVELY BONES meets ALL THE RAGE in a searing, heartbreaking contemporary story of a lost teenager, and the town she leaves behind.
Ellie Frias disappeared long before she vanished.
Tormented throughout middle school, Ellie begins her freshman year with a new look: she doesn’t need to be popular; she just needs to blend in with the wallpaper.
But then the unthinkable happens and Ellie is trapped after a brutal assault. She wasn't the first victim and now she watches it happen again and again. She tries to hold on to her happier memories in order to get past the cold days, waiting for someone to find her.
The problem is, no one searches for a girl they never noticed in the first place.
TE Carter’s stirring and visceral debut not only discusses and dismantles rape culture but also makes you slow down and think about what it is to be human.

Nobody noticed me as I cut through the room. I made my way outside, into the cold. Spring was playing games with us. Weeks earlier, it had snuck in overnight, erasing our memory of winter in a matter of hours. When we’d gone to bed, winter had lingered in the snowbanks and in the way the trees still hunched over from the weight of it. And then suddenly, spring. We woke to birds singing, birds who appeared to have been shipped overnight on a secret train, and we remembered music.
But now, winter was trying to force a comeback. Everyone outside stood looking at the pool, wondering what happened. I was shivering, wearing a skirt and thin shirt I’d borrowed from Kate when spring was still a promise.
I saw him from the periphery. From the in-between where the people inside faded into the background, but the people outside were only figures in the night. It made sense; I was a periphery girl.
“Hey,” I said to his back.
When he turned to look at me, I swear the light from the porch surrounded him. But I think I made that up. I think I want to remember him that way. I want to believe there was something that made him special. I want to believe that loneliness doesn’t just mess with our hearts.
“Ellie! You came,” Caleb said.
“I said I would.”
“I know. I wasn’t sure, though. I worried. You’re late.”
I’d walked to the party, after telling my dad I was going to a friend’s. He wouldn’t have stopped me from going to Gina Lynn’s. I didn’t have other friends, so it wouldn’t have made a difference if I’d said her name. But, for some reason, I lied. I lied and I don’t know why I did.
“Yeah, well, I was doing things.”
He laughed. “Mysterious things. Of course. I’d expect nothing less from my Elusive Ellie.”
My. I heard it. The claim he laid on me. I smiled at the word.
He moved closer and I stepped back. It was automatic. Since earlier in the week, by my locker, I hadn’t stopped thinking about the possibility. But now that he was close again, I was scared. I was afraid of the way I knew I’d hurt if he waited months to talk to me again. I didn’t want to fall for a guy just because he’d smiled at me and said my name a few times. I was afraid of what would happen if there was more to it than that, but I was also afraid of how I’d feel if there wasn’t.
“I don’t think I’m supposed to be here,” I said.
I’d always imagined being wanted. Of someone loving me. Choosing me. But here was this boy and if he kissed me, I knew I’d always worry about going back to not being wanted.

TE Carter was born in New England and has lived in New England for pretty much her entire life. Throughout her career, she’s done a lot of things, although her passion has always been writing. When she’s not writing, she can generally be found reading classic literature, obsessing over Game of Thrones (she’s one hundred percent Team Lannister), playing Xbox, organizing her comic collection, or binge watching baking competitions. She continues to live in New England with her husband and their two cats.

YALC 2017 Recap

Last weekend I was lucky enough to go to YALC for the third year in a row! I went for all three days and I had so much fun  : )

Here's how my time at YALC went . . .

Friday:

Panels - Heroines, SFF Now and We Love Buffy.
Signings - Alwyn Hamilton, Samantha Shannon and Elizabeth May.

Saturday:

Panels - Who Runs The World?, Myth Magic and Fairy-Tale, Laini Taylor and The Books That Made Me.
Signings - Katherine Webber, V.E. Schwab and Lauren James.

Sunday:

Panels - Patrick Ness
Signings - Anna Day

I missed out on a few panels so that I could queue early for authors I knew would have long queues. It was totally worth it - some authors were signing for over three hours!

I also went down to the Comic Con floor on the Sunday and met Alan Tudyk. He shook my hand and was lovely. He signed my Firefly dictionary that I got signed by Sean Maher last year : )

I bought this lovely drawing of Princess Leia. It's gorgeous!

Throughout the three days I got my hands on LOTS of goodies . . .

I also got my nails painted by Anderson Press who were promoting Things A Bright Girl Can Do by Sally Nicholls. By tweeting a picture with the hashtag #BrightThingsAGirlCanDo you could enter to win a proof copy. My sister won a copy (yep, totally jealous).

I got to see the reveal for the third and final book in the Rebel of the Sands trilogy, Hero at the Fall.
It's GORGEOUS!

I didn't buy as many books as I thought I might and managed to get a few proofs. I missed out on Zenith though : (

Geekerella is a hardback and came with a poster. It's so pretty!

Editing Emma was a bargain - I bought it on the Sunday afternoon when publishers had lowered their prices to get rid of stock. It was only £1!

Waterstones were selling early copies of The Loneliest Girl in the Universe and I grabbed one as soon as I could (they sold VERY quickly!). I can't wait to read it.

These are the books I got for free/from the book swap.

YALC was really fun and I got to see lots of celebs in passing (Benedict Cumberbatch walked through several times) and I definitely want to go next year, BUT I found some of the stalls a bit disappointing this year - some were smaller and there was a lot less choice at the freebie table this year. It was good to see some book box subscription stalls there though.

Did you go to YALC?
What was your favourite thing?

by Aden Polydoros!
Be sure to grab your copy today!

Congratulations Aden!

Tyler Bennett trusts no one. Just another foster kid bounced from home to home, he’s learned that lesson the hard way. Cue world’s tiniest violin. But when strange things start happening—waking up with bloody knuckles and no memory of the night before or the burner phone he can’t let out of his sight— Tyler starts to wonder if he can even trust himself.

Even stranger, the girl he’s falling for has a burner phone just like his. Finding out what’s really happening only leads to more questions…questions that could get them both killed. It’s not like someone’s kidnapping teens lost in the system and brainwashing them to be assassins or anything, right? And what happens to rogue assets who defy control?

In a race against the clock, they’ll have to uncover the truth behind Project Pandora and take it down—before they’re reactivated. Good thing the program spent millions training them to kick ass...

Blog Tour + Giveaway - Just Friends by Tiffany Pitcock

Find the tour schedule here.

Just Friends by Tiffany Pitcock
Published by: Swoon Reads
Publication date: August 1st 2017
Genres: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult

A new spin on the classic smart-girl-and-bad-boy setup, this witty contemporary romance shows how easily a friendship – even one built on an elaborate lie – can become so much more.

Jenny meets Chance for the very first time when she is assigned as his partner in their Junior Oral Communications class. But after they rescue a doomed assignment with one clever lie, the whole school is suddenly convinced that Little-Miss-Really-Likes-Having-A’s and the most scandalous heartbreaker in school have been best friends forever. It’s amazing how quickly a lie can grow―especially when you really, really want it to be the truth.

With Jenny, Chance can live the normal life he’s always kind of wanted. And with Chance, Jenny can have the exciting teen experiences that TV shows and movies have always promised. Through it all, they hold on to the fact that they are “just friends.” But that might be the biggest lie of all.

Debut author Tiffany Pitcock delivers a spot-on depiction of first love and the high school rumor mill in Just Friends, chosen by readers like you for Macmillan’s young adult imprint Swoon Reads.

Excerpt:

“Fine, what’s my dare?”
She pointed to the trampoline out to the right of the yard by the fence. It looked like an old thing, they had decided that they had spent many summer nights bouncing and laughing, sun bathing and sleeping, but they had never actually gotten on it. Dead leaves curled up on it and the springs squeaked from disuse. “Get on that.”
Chance agreed, grabbing Jenny’s hand as he passed, helping her down. “You too,” he said, dragging her with him. He hopped up on the edge, releasing her hand to take off his shoes.
“That’s a metal deathtrap.” Jenny shook her head. “I’m not getting on that. Jackie isn’t even allowed on it after last summer.”
“And yet you want me on it? Rude.” He tossed one shoe to the ground. “How about neither of us jumps? We’ll lie out like we used to in our fake past.” The other shoe dropped, disappearing into the dying grass.
Finally, she jumped up beside him – kicking off her own flats to join him. He was crawling towards the middle, sprawled out on the dead leaves. They were already clinging to his hair like magnets. After a moment, she moved to lie with him.
“How is this a dare, again?” he asked after a moment of silence.
“One wrong move and this whole thing could snap. We could be dead in seconds.”
Chance doubted that. “You’re being overdramatic, Jenny.”
They laid in silence for a while; both watching the clouds pass by until Chance’s eyelids felt heavy and he had to fight to keep them up. It had been almost two weeks since he’d had a decent night’s sleep, with his parents and their screaming. Jenny’s head still rested on his shoulder and he could feel her breath on his neck. It was warm, relaxing…

It seemed like only seconds had passed when he opened his eyes to find the sun was setting. Jenny’s head was on his chest, slowly rising and falling with each breath he took. He wondered if she could hear his heartbeat, slow and steady.  Her eyes were shut, her eyelashes fluttering. They both must’ve dozed off. His hand rested on the small of her back, her warmth radiating through the fabric of her shirt.
He reached up and pushed her hair from her face. He wanted to kiss her.
“Jenny, wake up,” he carefully nudged her awake.
She groggily opened her eyes, “Wha?”
“We dozed off,” he told her.
She sat up, picking dried leaves off her shirt. “Oh, damn. I hope Jack’s taking care of Jessa.”
He sat up too, an idea forming. “It’s my turn, isn’t it?” he asked.
“Huh?” she turned back to look at him, a few leaves still tangled in her brown hair.
“The Day of Dares,” He reminded her. “It’s my turn to issue a dare.”
“Oh, I suppose so.”
“I’ve got a dare for you,” he leaned forward, blonde hair tumbling into his eyes.
She scooted across the trampoline to him. “What kind?”
He reached out and grabbed her hands. “I dare you to kiss me.”

Author Bio

23. Writer. Reader. Sarcastic.

I was born and raised in Arkansas, which isn’t terribly exciting. I’ve wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember. I used to sit in class and write stories in my notebooks, thinking that everyone did. It turns out, everyone didn’t. I love writing because it means I’m putting my thoughts, feelings, and soul out there for someone else to read – for someone else to feel. The fact that someone can read my words, and empathize with my characters – characters that wouldn’t exist with out me, that I created from my mind – is such a wonderful concept to me. I could happily write for the rest of my life as long as there was one person out there who was affected by my words.
