When did you start writing?
I started making up stories as soon as I was old enough to speak (Seriously. Ask my mom). By the time I was in high school I was writing angsty poetry , short stories, and one absolutely awful novel. I didn’t start taking my writing seriously (by seriously I mean with the intent to get published) until I was thirty.
What makes you want to write?
I love it, simply. There is nothing like creating something and sharing it with others.
Do you ever get writer's block and what do you do to get over it?
More times than I care to admit. I notice it pops its ugly head up whenever I’m stressed or overwhelmed, which is usually when I have a deadline and REALLY need it to go away. I hate it. So. Much. I haven’t really figured out a way to deal with it, other than to relax, if I can, and just write.
Do you have a special way of going about writing?
Not really. I’m a night nurse, so on my nights off I’m usually up writing until sunrise. Sometimes I need music. Sometimes I need absolute silence. Sometimes I need coffee. Sometimes I need wine. It all depends.
Do you have any works in progress?
I do! I’m about to start working on the third and final book in the Call Me Grim series, which is untitled at the moment. I also have a YA thriller in the works called Drive. It’s about a teen petty thief who finds a girl tied up in the back of a van and decides to follow the van. I hope to have that one finished next year.
When I get the time, I love to hit some karaoke joints and belt out a few tunes. And as a writer, I’m an avid reader. Lately, I’ve taken to listening to audiobooks on my long-as-heck commute to and from work.
How did you choose the character names for Death Becomes Me?
For any of my books, I usually just pick a name off the top of my head. If it doesn’t seem right after a little bit of writing, I’ll change it. For instance, in Death Becomes Me, there is a character named Nicholas. Nicholas started his life has Micah, which didn’t suit him at all.
Who is your favourite character in Death Becomes Me?
Hmm… Other than Libbi and Aaron, which I guess is a given, I’d have to say Bobby. He’s the character you love to hate and it was SO much fun writing him.
How did you get the idea for the Call Me Grim series?
I honestly can’t say where the idea came from. I just remember thinking to myself that being the Grim Reaper would be the suckiest job ever. Then I thought… What if he wanted to quit? What if he wanted to give it to someone else? And the story was born :)
What was your favourite part of writing Death Becomes Me?
Editing. Drafting is grueling and for me, it’s when that ugly monster Writer’s Block likes to show up. Did I mention how much I hate that jerk?
What are you currently reading?
Currently, I’m reading—well, listening to—Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas. Such a great series!
What is your favourite book?
There are so many that I love for different reasons. I can say that I’ve read the Harry Potter series several times, which I never, ever do. I usually only read a book once. Of those books, my favorite is Order of the Phoenix.
Who is your favourite author?
So many authors! I can’t decide. Stephen King, maybe. I’ve read almost all of his books.
What is your favourite film?
Ugh! You keep trying to get me to decide! It’s like Sophie’s Choice. (I might have just aged myself with that reference). I loved Pan’s Labyrinth and anytime I’m flipping the channels and see The Shawshank Redemption is on, I stop and watch it.
What is your favourite TV show?
Face Off, the American-Idol-esque show about make-up artists. I love it. I’m an out of practice artist and I love watching those artists work. It brings me right back to when I spent all of my extra time in a studio.
