Title: This is One Moment
Author: Mila Gray
Pages: 384
Publisher: Pan Macmillan
Release date: 6th August 2015

Blurb from Goodreads:

Didi Monroe’s waited her whole life for the type of romance you see in the movies, so when Hollywood heartthrob Zac Ridgemont sweeps her off her feet, Didi believes she might finally have met the one.

While Zac’s away filming for the summer, Didi begins her internship at a military hospital in California. There, she meets wounded Marine Noel Walker.

Frustrated on the outside and broken on the inside, Walker’s a pain-in-the-ass patient who refuses all help.

Yet Didi can’t help but be drawn to him, and though he’s strictly out of bounds it soon becomes impossible to ignore the sparks flying between them.

As the attraction simmers into dangerous territory, Didi finds herself falling hard for a man she knows is going to break her heart. Because Walker doesn’t believe in love or happy ever afters. So what possible future can there be?

Then tragedy hits, shattering both their worlds, and Didi is forced to choose between fighting for love or merely falling for the illusion of it.

My Review:

*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to Pan Macmillan and NetGalley*

3/5 stars

Didi Monroe is a romantic so when Hollywood superstar Zac Ridgemont takes an interest in her she keeps seeing him even though the last thing she wants is to be a booty call and Zac isn't looking for anything more.
Didi starts an internship at a military hospital as part of her degree. There she meets Noel Walker, a grumpy young Lieutenant who is suffering from guilt and blindness. Despite Walker's coldness, Didi finds herself drawn to him even though she's meant to keep a distance from the patients.
Didi falls for Walker but can they be together when he doesn't believe in happy endings?

This is One Moment was an intriguing, emotional read.
Didi was a good protagonist - she was likeable, relatable and caring.
Walker is not your typical romantic lead - he was broken and his faults were very believable given what he'd been through.
The plot was good and held my interest but there were some things I saw coming and I wasn't gripped. I liked the writing style and it was easy to follow.

Overall this was an enjoyable read.

Promo Post + Giveaway - Loving Red by Alisha Costanzo

Blurb:

For Sergeant Severins Bouvier, silence means tactical planning and a large death toll, and he can’t shake how danger threatens him on the beaches of Miami, especially after seeing one of his associates in a local sandwich shop. Worse, the enemy seems fascinated with the woman he can’t stop thinking about—a woman determined not to trust him.

Everything about Sev crashes through Kaia’s carefully placed boundaries, traps, and avoidances. Regardless of her lack of interest in the majority of men, the ones that did catch her off guard left a lot of collateral damage. Who better than a soldier to understand that?

The problem is that she trusts him. Just not with her heart
.

 Excerpt:

Sach met them on the small porch with a .22 rifle pointed at the woods behind him, likely loaded with silver and cold iron since no bullets existed to kill vampires, but a well-placed shot would slow one down. Kaia moved fast and disappeared inside in under a minute. Thank the Gods she took direction well. When a soldier didn’t learn to obey, they tended to die.
Lacey trotted out of the trees and up to the porch, changing into her dark almond form and trailing her hands over Sach’s front as she rounded him. She peered over his shoulder to meet Severins’ gaze. “One fell into a trap, and the others ran off scared. She won’t get out anytime soon, so when you’re ready for her...”
Her hand dipped down between Sach’s legs, and he grunted. Lacey had a reputation for sexual aggression after her transformations, especially when she fought. “Wake Dylan to take your watch.”
He merely nodded to her, and she sauntered back into the woods.
“Looks like you need clothes.”
“I could do with that.”
Sach nodded inside, and Severins followed, walking into the cabin he knew too well to see Kaia sitting in front of the glowing coals in the fireplace. The way she looked him over gave him a charge, and he worked hard to control himself. She turned away with blush on her cheeks and neck, shoving an aroused growl through his chest.
But Severins tailed Sach into the single bedroom, where he gained a new Army issued uniform with jacket and boots included to dress in.
“Probably sick of that, but it’s what we’ve got to fit you. Surplus store in town.”
Sach moved over to Dylan and whacked him with a rolled up newspaper. His brother sat up swinging, a full snarl on his mouth. “Go take watch.”
“I just got to sleep.”
“Argue with Lace about it.”
Grumbling loudly, Dylan rolled out of bed and dressed, grabbing his gun and punching Severins in the shoulder on his way out. Nabbing the thick brush on the low dresser, Severins followed him, pushing him along when he stopped to whistle at Kaia.
“Don’t try me, cuz.”
“Just appreciating your taste.”
Kaia sent him the same man-killing look Severins earned when he first asked her to dinner, and Severins laughed at its effectiveness. Her gaze warmed as she took in his uniform, a tiny smile lifted her lips when he neared her. “You’re right, you do look good in uniform.”
He tossed the jacket and brush on the couch and sank down next to her. “Keeping warm?”
“Yeah. I’m recovering. Do we know anything?”
The skin of her cheek was soft under his thumb. “Not a lot. We’ve caught someone and need to interrogate her.”
“Her?” Kaia’s pulse skipped into high gear.
“So I’ve been told.”
“They won’t torture her, will they?” Fear and concern leaned her into him, and he wrapped her up in his arms.
“No. We won’t hurt her unless she makes us.”
Nodding, she stroked his chest and sank into his embrace, and he traced the bumps of her spine through her sweatshirt. When her shoulders dropped from her ears, Severins shifted her in his lap and reached for the brush. “Let me brush your hair. It’ll help you feel a bit more normal.”
“That would be nice.” Hugging her knees, she shook her hair out, trusting him not to hurt her. He’d learned the tricks to tangles when his daughter was three and her soft curls got long enough to knot together. Kaia’s hair was windblown but not terribly knotted, and Severins brushed out the ends, collecting it all in his hand before working up to her scalp. She sighed when he finished, running her hands through it and shaking it around before she looked over her shoulder at him. “Thank you.”
Leaning forward, he grabbed her around the waist and pulled her back against him. His nose sank to her neck behind her ear, taking in the intoxicating spicy and citrus scent of her.
“You’re welcome, beautiful. Why don’t you make yourself at home and take a nap on the couch. You didn’t get much rest when we stopped the last time.”
The sound of her soft laughter eased his mind and tightened his body. “You must be a kind, gentle, and doting father, the way you’re taking care of me.”
Grinning against her throat, he said, “The way I want to take care of you has nothing to do with my capabilities as a father, I promise you that.” Teeth at her skin, he gave her a sharp enough nip to make her shiver.
“Well, your capabilities as a father might just make you more attractive.”
His bites followed the curve up her neck. “Is that right?”
Hand lifted to trace his jaw, her fingers found his high and tight again, and she sighed.
“When you’re out, will you grow your hair or leave it like this?”
A snort burst from him. “Well, I used to have long hair, so I’m sure I can manage to keep it at an easy, hair-pulling length.”
A wide grin lit up her face, and she turned against him, those delicate fingers brushing over his brow, and she looked him over. Tension filled the gap between them, and she closed it, pressing her mouth over his with such a sweet and innocent kiss that pieces of him broke and reformed, making him the man he needed to be to love her right when the time came.
Severins held onto her tightly, wishing they weren’t on the run, that he didn’t have to worry about her safety, and that he could woo her the right way with romantic nights and silly mornings of laughter and playfulness. She deserved nothing less. Yet here they were, hidden away in his cousins’ cabin in the Alabama boonies, trying to outrun a pack of Celampresians and in search of her ex—the man who broke her heart. The man they both protected. Was he running head first into the most stupid mistake he’d ever make?

Blog Tour + Guest Post - Like it Never Happened by Emily Adrian

Like It Never Happened by Emily Adrian
Publisher: Dial Books
Release Date: June 2nd 2015
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance, Realistic Fiction, High School, Chick Lit, Theatre, Fiction

Synopsis:

Stereotypes, sexuality, and destructive rumors collide in this smart YA novel for fans of Sara Zarr’s Story of a Girl, Siobhan Vivian’s The List, and E. Lockhart’s The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks.

When Rebecca Rivers lands the lead in her school’s production of The Crucible, she gets to change roles in real life, too. She casts off her old reputation, grows close with her four rowdy cast-mates, and kisses the extremely handsome Charlie Lamb onstage. Even Mr. McFadden, the play’s critical director, can find no fault with Rebecca.

Though “The Essential Five” vow never to date each other, Rebecca can’t help her feelings for Charlie, leaving her both conflicted and lovestruck. But the on and off-stage drama of the cast is eclipsed by a life-altering accusation that threatens to destroy everything…even if some of it is just make believe.

When I was in high school, I spent a lot of time writing, but I almost never wrote fiction. I knew that I wanted to be a novelist someday, but whenever I tried to bestow my ideas upon a made-up person with a made-up life, my sentences became stiff and stilted and bad. So instead of writing stories, I wrote epic letters to my best friend, long-winded diary entries, and notes to my mother—which I left on the kitchen counter, because texting was not yet a thing.
I don’t think I understood that these daily records were practice for the books I would eventually write, until I discovered my local library’s copy of Feeling Sorry For Celia by Jaclyn Moriarty. Told entirely in letters, notes, and mysterious messages from organizations such as “The Society of People Who Are Definitely Going to Fail High School (and Most Probably Life as Well)”, Feeling Sorry For Celia stars a protagonist, Elizabeth Clarry, who, to me, feels entirely non-fictional. Reading the book, it’s hard to remember that Elizabeth is not a real person, and I think that’s because the novel’s form allows us to see Elizabeth’s life in high definition. We read the notes in which her mother begs her to wear “seven pairs of stockings,” to which Elizabeth retorts: “You have some kind of body temperature problem.” A scolding message from “The Association of Teenagers” shows us the embarrassing details of Elizabeth’s bedroom (Little Mermaid duvet cover), and in letters between Elizabeth and her mandatory pen-pal from a rival school, we hear all about gratuitous homework assignments and adventures on public transportation.
Like It Never Happened is not an epistolary novel, but I do think that a lot of its humor is rooted in the particulars of Rebecca’s world—tiny exchanges and observations. And the result, I hope, is a level of authenticity that’s totally Jaclyn Moriarty-inspired.
I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith is another novel that I first picked up when I was about fourteen, and one that I re-read shortly before writing the first draft of Like It Never Happened. I Capture the Castle is about seventeen-year-old Cassandra, who lives a very isolated life in a dilapidated English castle with her depressed dad, eccentric stepmother, and older sister. When two unmarried brothers inherit the property and become the family’s new landlords, Cassandra watches her older sister puzzle over which guy would make the best husband. Cassandra doesn’t anticipate falling for Simon, the man who becomes her sister’s boyfriend, or the extent to which her feelings will grow even after Simon and Rose are engaged.
I Capture the Castle is one of my favorite depictions of a character falling for someone who’s off limits—particularly because it shows that Cassandra’s feelings for Simon don’t stem from instant physical attraction, but from the conversations they have when they’re alone. Dodie Smith’s novel is messy, full of people who are in love with the wrong people and totally unsure of when they crossed that line. The relationships in Like It Never Happened are similarly painted in shades of grey. Ultimately, I think my novel is about Rebecca’s struggle to identify the line between friendship and love—the same question addressed with such heart and complexity in I Capture the Castle.

Excerpt:

“Skybright … ” He tugged her gently to him. “I never feel

as if I can speak of my past with the other monks. Because of

my birthmark. Because I’m different. But with you, I … ” He
didn’t finish the thought, but instead leaned in and kissed her.
It was like a jolt, quickening her pulse. His mouth was full,
firm against her own. He smelled of camphor wood and sweat.
Of boy. His tongue flicked across her lips and instinctively she
opened her mouth to him. She gasped when their tongues met.
Warmth pooled in her stomach and spread, till her entire body
was roused.

Lit.

His hands had wound around her waist, sneaked under
her sleep tunic so she could feel his rough palms against her
midriff. They met at the small of her back and slid upward,
till his fingers caressed her shoulder blades, and they were
crushed against each other.

They kissed until the blood roared in her ears and she felt
drunk with desire. Then something ignited inside of her, that
now familiar heat, writhing through and pulsing down her
legs. Terrified, she shoved his shoulders hard, and he stumbled
back, dazed.

Skybright clutched her head between tight fists, willing the
blazing heat away. Willing herself not to change. No. Not now.
Not in front of Kai Sen. Her body shook with the effort, still
trembling from the kiss they had shared. Terror constricted her
chest.

His thumb stroked her cheek, and she jerked away from him.

“What was that?” She tried to catch her breath, and the
words came unevenly.

“I’ve always wondered what it was like, to kiss.” His voice
sounded low and thick.

“So you decided to experiment on the first handmaid you
came across?”

The first handmaid he came across naked in the forest.
Humiliation and anger wound tight within her, and she
welcomed the emotions. Anything to smother the heat that
threatened to rise below.

Kai Sen made a choking noise. “No. Of course not. I
wanted to kiss you.” He lifted his hand to touch her again and
she slapped it aside. “I like you,” he said quietly. “I’ve seen
plenty of servant girls in town, wandering the markets. But
you were the only I ever knew brave enough to climb a giant
cypress to spy on monks.” He smiled. “You’re the only one
I’ve felt I could share my past with–”

“You don’t even know me,” she said. And it felt as if her
heart was shattering like brittle porcelain, because Kai Sen
could never truly know her. Not ever. “Please go.”
He took a step back, and she hated him for obeying her.

“Will you still meet me in the morning by the creek?” he asked.
