Book Blitz and Giveaway - Where Life Takes You by Claudia Y. Burgoa

Where Life Takes You by Claudia Y. Burgoa

Publication date: July 31st 2013
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult

Synopsis:

Becca Trent lived her childhood next to a cruel woman—her mom—who lived to torment and neglect her. During her high school years, her mother married; bringing home not only a new husband, but a step sister her same age. The latter took over her Mom’s role—making Becca’s life miserable. Including stealing Ian—Becca’s best friend and boyfriend—Lisa treated her worse than her mother had for the previous fifteen years. A couple of years later, things ended up in tragedy.

Becca buried that part of her life in the deep corners of her psyche, but that only work during the days when the nightmares didn’t come back to haunt her. Her best friend, Dan gives her that family love she always lacked. Everything was close to perfect, until everything and everyone from her past came back. Now, she’s trying to figure out how to survive and keep that bond which seems now to be held together by a thread.

Note: This is the first part of a two book novel.

Excerpt:

“We ran out of chocolate chips.” Dan put a full plate of pancakes on the table. “Do you think you’ll survive a few days without your fix?”
“I’ve more across the hallway, and you can fetch them later.” if drenched the pancakes with maple syrup, took a bite, and moaned. “Amazingly good! I’m impressed. You dominate the kitchen like it’s your boardroom. Who taught you how to cook?”
Dan poured orange juice for us both, as well as a cup of coffee for him, and a glass of milk for me. He sat next to me, covered his own pancakes cautiously—not Becca style—cut a piece of pancake, and ate it. “Hmm they are good, but they don’t seem to affect me the way they do you.” he chuckled.
I awaited his answer curiously.
“My last foster family.” He’d gone through more than one foster homes? “My foster mother taught her surrogate children to fend for themselves. Our chores included cleaning, cooking, and washing dishes and clothes. No, she didn’t want cheap labor. She did it to teach us how a normal house hold functioned, and to care for ourselves.”
“She sounds smart. I’m guessing you helped her—or them— after you became the all-powerful Daniel Brightmore?” if asked, while sneaking my fork onto his plate to steal a piece of his pan- cake. Mine had disappeared way too fast. He playfully fake- slapped my hand away, and I pouted at him. “Selfish. That’s why no one likes you.”
“You not only like me, you love me, little one.” he fed me a fork full of pancake and gave me a satisfied smile. “After my first company became fully successful, I set up a trust fund for the Swansons. It made sense to help them after everything they did, and didn’t, do for me.” I knitted my eyebrows in confusion. “They didn’t hit me, or abuse me. Very few children get to spend their years in the system with people who truly care. Richard Swanson taught me how to hold a hammer, use
power tools, and fix cars.” His voice became more animated as he continued with the story, and those gray eyes smiled at the fondness of the moments he told. “Thanks to him and those skills, I held a few jobs during college. And was able to begin my first company. Last year I moved them to Austin, Texas. They’re getting old, and the weather is nice year-round.”

Sneak Peek - Sun and Moon by Lee Strauss

Sun & Moon by Lee Strauss
(Book One in the Minstrel Series)

Coming January 26th!

If you’re a fan of the movie Inside Llewyn Davis, ABC television’s Nashville or Colleen Hoover’s upcoming novel, "Maybe Someday", the Minstrel Series is for you!

The Minstrel Series is a collection of contemporary romance novels set in the singer/songwriter world. The books are companion novels, with shared settings and characters, but each are complete standalone stories with a HEA (happily ever after) and no cliffhangers!

Excerpt:
Katja was impressed. “How did you learn to cook?” She couldn’t imagine his mother stepping foot into a kitchen.
“We had cooks. I wanted to learn, and they taught me.”
He had cooks. She had a mother who could barely pull herself out of bed.
“It helps to set a timer,” Micah added, winking. “Especially if you find yourself distracted by a song demanding to be written or a picture insisting on being sketched.” He set the timer, and then handed her a spoon. “You need to stir it once in a while.”
Micah pulled the tin lid off a small plastic container. “Now to add crème and a bit of salt and pepper to the vegetables and stir.”
Katja found it increasingly difficult to pull her gaze away from her teacher. Men who knew their way around a kitchen were sexy. Her pulse jumped as she watched him, and she felt herself flush. “So, what’s left?” she asked, trying to distract herself.
“The cheese. Many people like Parmesan, but I prefer sheep cheese. It adds a nice tang.” He sliced a piece of the block and handed it to Katja. “You can grate it.”
Micah produced a grater and Katja began the process of shredding the cheese onto a plate. Micah made no attempt to hide the fact that he was staring at her.
“Don’t do that,” she said.
“Do what?”
“You know what.”
“I want to kiss you.”
She dropped the cheese, and dared to glance at him. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
He stepped closer, forcing her to back up against the counter. “I think it’s a great idea.”
Oh, Lord, she really wanted him to kiss her. But it was still a really, really bad idea. Her pulse raged and her body flooded with warmth. Her throat grew dry. She heard herself say. “Perhaps it’s not the worst idea.”
Yes it was! A terrible, terrible idea!
He pressed his mouth to her ear, his breath causing tremors that would break the Richter scale. “Admit it. It’s a fantastic idea.”
She gulped, wanting nothing more than to grab him by the shirt and pull him to her. “Maybe not so bad,” she whispered.
“Not so bad works for me.” Micah’s lips found hers, and Katja was sure the kitchen floor had cracked open. She was falling, helplessly. She grabbed his head and returned the kiss, urgently taking him in. She wrapped a leg around him and he grabbed her thigh. She wanted to tear his shirt off and drag him to his room.
Then she remembered his force field.
And her own oath to leave.
She’d told him he had until Tuesday to change her mind and here she was sucking his lips off on Monday night.
Did she have no willpower at all? Had she changed her mind about what she should do so easily? Tomorrow she’d still be the poor girl chasing a dream, and he’d still be the rich boy with every advantage. And with a domineering mother who scared the crap out of her. Mrs. Sturm would always be trying to break them up, and eventually she would win. She and Micah had too much working against them.
She had to be stronger than this.
She placed a palm against his chest and pushed gently. “Micah…”
He tapped a finger to her lips. “You promised me until Tuesday.”
“That’s tomorrow.”
“Then I have you until tomorrow.”

Review - Cursed (Voodoo Nights, #1) by Lizzy Ford

Goodreads Blurb:

The Red Man is coming ...

Five years after her sister disappeared, seventeen-year-old Adrienne finds the strength to return to her father’s home in New Orleans. But soon after she arrives, the mark of a curse appears on her, leaving her worried. Will she be the next victim of a four-hundred-year old family curse ... the next to be claimed by a serial killer roaming the back alleys of the city?

The day before his senior year begins, Jayden is given a skeleton key passed down through his family for generations -- a gruesome reminder of how his ancestors betrayed their own people and sold them into slavery. He doesn’t believe in the curse the key allegedly bears and puts it away with the intention of forgetting about its message. Until he meets Adrienne, a girl he’s compelled to for more reasons than her beauty.

He’s not the only one who notices her. A man in a skeleton mask and a voodoo gang member are also drawn to Adrienne. One is determined to protect her. The other intends to mislead her. Haunted by the mythical Red Man, all are connected to the ancient curse.

Can they overcome their misgivings about one another and prevent the dark prophecy looming over them? Or will they be lured away from each other by evil’s siren song?

My Review:

*I received a copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to Indie Inked and Lizzy Ford*

 4/5 stars

Adrienne moves to New Orleans to live with her father five years after her sister's death, having received a scholarship for a prestigious school. Marked with a family curse, Adrienne wonders if moving to New Orleans was such a good idea with news of a serial killer in the area.

Jayden doesn't believe in voodoo or in the curse that is supposedly linked with a dark family secret and key.

Linked by their pasts, Adrienne and Jayden must break a curse that might result in one or both of their deaths.

Cursed is a very intriguing book. I really enjoyed the voodoo theme and found the writing style easy to follow. The characters were likeable though I was slightly annoyed at the discovery that there might be a love triangle. The book ended, I felt, quite suddenly and I definitely want to read the sequel.
Overall Cursed was a pleasantly surprising and enjoyable read.
