The 13th Brigade by Ky Lehman
(Rosefire Trilogy, #2)
Publication date: October 31st 2015
Genres: Paranormal Romance, Young Adult
The Light bore her.
The Earth whittled her.
The Air swayed her.
The Water cleansed her.
The Fire renewed her.
And after thirteen lifetimes, her blood still condemns her…
As the final battle between her ancient enemies and her kin rages around her, Ren must decide if it will be her first great love, or the great man who has loved her since the first, who will sacrifice their last life on Earth to bring the truth to light to save a world teetering on the brink of eternal darkness.
This second installment of The Rosefire Trilogy by Ky Lehman: a series created for all young adults at heart, answers many of the questions raised in Book 1, THE 13TH DESCENT, as the individual battles of Ren, Josh, Mike and the Tor all come to a head as they wage their final war against humankind’s greatest threat. Ren also must cross swords with the traitorous Tor Princess, Avira, who is determined to claim Mike as her own, so they can live, and forget, together under the Bloodstones dictatorship of the new world: a darkness Ren and The 13th Brigade will fight until their last breath to save Mike, Josh, and the people of Earth from enduring.
The third and final book in The Rosefire Trilogy, THE 13TH RISING, is in the making, and will be coming…soon…

Title: An Inheritance of Ashes
Author: Leah Bobet
Publisher: Clarion Books
Release date: 6th October 2015
Blurb from Goodreads:
The strange war down south—with its rumors of gods and monsters—is over. And while sixteen-year-old Hallie and her sister wait to see who will return from the distant battlefield, they struggle to maintain their family farm.
When Hallie hires a veteran to help them, the war comes home in ways no one could have imagined, and soon Hallie is taking dangerous risks—and keeping desperate secrets. But even as she slowly learns more about the war and the men who fought it, ugly truths about Hallie’s own family are emerging. And while monsters and armies are converging on the small farm, the greatest threat to her home may be Hallie herself.
*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Children's Book Group and NetGalley*
The war in the south is over and veterans are making their way home. Hallie and Marthe, sisters and co-owners of a large farm, are waiting for Thom, Marthe's husband, to return. Hopefully before the birth of his and Marthe's baby.
In need of help on the farm, Hallie hires a veteran named Heron.
Soon Twisted Things, peculiar creatures and remnants of the war, start appearing on the farm.
Is Heron who he says he is?
Can Hallie save the farm?
Will Thom come home?
An Inheritance of Ashes was a mixed read for me.
I liked Hallie and Marthe and felt sorry for them - they hadn't had an easy life growing up thanks to their father and now they were struggling to keep the farm running. I found it sad that they'd gone from being close to fighting all the time.
There was some romance but it was more of a background thing - which I liked - and it was quite sweet.
The plot was slow in places but I found the idea of Twisted Things interesting - especially how our world affected them. I would have liked to know more about how the war started.
The writing style was enjoyable and easy to follow but I wasn't gripped and I did lose interest in one or two places.
Overall this was an okay read.

The Martian Promo
Another promo video was released for The Martian.
After watching these teasers I think Shadowhunters looks a bit cheesy but hopefully it's good.

Dead Jed is Shaun of the Dead meets Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Jed's not your typical junior high geek. He is, to use the politically-correct term, cardiovascularly-challenged. And while his parents have attempted to shield him from the implications of being 'different' for as long as they could (Jed was 8 and at a friend's sister's birthday party when he blew his lips off onto the cake in front of everyone, finally prompting the “Big Talk” from his parents and an emergency SuperGlue repair by his dad), 7th grade at Pine Hollow Middle School as a target of Robbie the supreme school bully and his pack of moronic toadies is rapidly becoming unbearable. From being stuffed in a filled trash can as “dead meat” and into a trophy case as the bully's “prize,” to literally having his hand pulled off in the boys' room (Jed's always losing body parts. Luckily, a good stapler and some duct tape and he's back in the action) and a cigarette put in it and try to frame him for the recent reports of smoking in the school, Jed's had enough and is ready to plan his revenge. Besides, it's awesome what you can do when you're already dead!
The first part of seventh grade was rough on Jed, but things are looking up now that Christmas is almost here. As with past Christmases, Jed asks for the one thing he’s always wanted–a dog–and again, his parents tell him they’re not ready. But fate has a different plan when Jed sees a dog get run over by a car. Then, it happens. Jed suddenly has a pet, Tread, a zombie dog bearing his namesake–a tire tread down his back. Jed may have gained a dog, but he loses his best friend Luke, who fears the way Jed created his undead pet. When Jed returns to school, he finds a mysterious group called the No Zombies Now Network spreading rumors of the dangers the undead pose to normal people. Forced to disprove Hollywood stereotypes, Jed has his work cut out for him as stories of a zombie dog begin to circulate. Jed could be expelled if he can’t expose the NZN Network as a fraud. Jed needs help from his kind of girlfriend Anna, especially after he discovers Luke has joined the shadowy group.Once again navigating the treacherous waters of middle school, Jed does his best to stay in one piece. Only this time he’ll need even more duct tape and staples than usual.
