Getting by ~ A Knight’s Tale I by Claudia Y. Burgoa

Publication date: February 18th 2014
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult

Synopsis:

When Emma Anderson arrived at San Francisco International Airport, she regretted accepting the distinction of being the maid of honor to Gaby’s—her childhood friend—wedding. It had been years since the last time she set foot in Menlo Park, where her parents had been killed. The rug where she had been shoving her feelings since that day looked bumpier than a camel’s hump. Who could blame her; if she hadn’t been selfish they’d still be around. Ever since that fateful day, Emma has been perfecting the knack of Getting By.

Cade’s wedding in Menlo Park—a city close to San Francisco—might be the perfect place for Jake Knight to shake the memories of his ex, Emma Anderson for good. Single, available women galore for an entire week was the perfect medication, one he intended to take three times a day for an entire week to return to his player days. It was a plan the former spy thought flawless until he came face to face with the maid of honor. Jake’s perfect retreat turns into a flight, fight or hide week of celebrations.

When did you start writing?

Professionally I began six years ago, though I didn’t feel that I had something concrete to share until last year. However, I’ve always tended to make up stories.

What makes you want to write?

The voices inside my head? Kind of, for unknown reasons I daydream—excessively. The want to see those dreams, ideas or tales become a story is what pushes me type them and tweak them until they are real—at least on paper.

Do you ever get writer's block and what do you do to get over it?

Yes and No. I get what I like to call writers ADD. As I’m supposed to be working on a book, nothing comes to mind; however a new idea sparks and I begin to work on that new little shiny plot. Two chapters later, I need to battle that one plot to get working with the other.
How I get over it…Lilo style.

Except I use my iPod and headphones while lying on the floor staring at nothing and listening to Silversun Pickups and Two Door Cinema Club, they usually get me back on track.

Do you have a special way of going about writing?

Not really, only let the flow of my ideas take over and we type until I have a substantial amount to work with. Then it’s time to organize it and erase what’s a bunch of gibberish that needs to be sent directly to a Jerry Springer show—if he still did the 90’s style family drama.

What are your hobbies?

When I have time, walking my dogs and watching movies. Reading is a staple of my day, I don’t consider it a hobbie, it’s more like a daily meal for the soul. I wished I had more time for other things, but with three children, three dogs and work it’s hard to find a little extra time to do something fun. That and I have to left hands to do any crafty things.

How did you choose the character names for A Knight's Tale I: Getting By?

Baby name books, I have four of them and so much fun playing with the meanings and origins. Also trying to match those names with the surname and the last name is one thing I love to do.

Do you have any works in progress?

Yes, at the moment I’m working with Karen Crain—my editor. We’re cleaning Next To You; the sequel to my first novel Where Life Takes You. Simultaneously I’m working on the first draft of Standing By; which is the second book of the Knight’s Tales series. This is Mitch’s story.

Who is your favorite character in A Knight's Tale I: Getting By?

From the main characters, I’d say it’s Emma; from the entire cast, Mitch is my favorite.

Where did you get the idea for A Knight's Tale I: Getting By?

I have a fun family, including a meddler aunt who has three boys. They are old enough to have wives and children but…they are all single. As I tend to do with everyone I meet or know, I began to wonder about a family with a similar situation; I mean why three handsome, successful guys would be opposed to and how to find them a HEA.

What was your favorite part of writing A Knight's Tale I: Getting By?

I guess trying to write a male POV, it was my first.

What are you currently reading?

Red Moon by Benjamin Percy.

What is your favorite book?

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.

Who is your favorite author?

Oops, that’s like asking who’s my favorite child. All of them are special but if I have to choose one I’d say Meg Cabot.

What is your favourite film?

You got Mail, though I can watch Back to the future over and over and over and over and…over again.

What is your favourite TV show?

Friends and Super Natural.
